Hi guys, I'm currently a second semester sophomore pre med and I still haven't declared a major. My GPA is 3.07 and my BCPM GPA is probably around a 2.9 (that is including 3 semesters of bio, 1 semester of gen chem, 1 semester of calculus, and 1 semester of physics . I already know these GPAS are nowhere near competitive for MD or even DO but I'm working to get those gpas up asap. I have already built up pretty good extracurriculars so I'm good on that part at least for now. I'm trying to decide whether to major in neuroscience or anthropology. Both interest me greatly, but I'm trying to figure out the best path here from where I can improve both GPAs as well as learn more about people, and the struggles that different culture groups face as well how it impacts their health. I would greatly appreciate anyone's input and if you have other majors that you think might better suit what I'm looking for let me know! thanks so much

1. Major in what interest you the most and minor in the other, if that is a viable option. I personally find neuroscience to be extremely fascinating so I would be biased on that.

2. Restrict the amount of time you come to this forum while you still have a chance. Best advice you could get from anyone.

1. Major in either one.

2. Get your GPA up.

3. Nail the MCAT.

4. If you can't decide what to major in, consider going for a double-major. It may take another year or so of classes, but it would allow you more time to improve on your GPA.

The plus side of majoring in neuro is that the classes are all BCPM, so if you do well, you will raise your sGPA while taking classes towards your major. The downside of neuro is that while interesting, some of the courses are pretty difficult and require a lot of studying (I was a neuro major). If you think you can commit to it, go for it. I like the post above about majoring in one and minoring in the other, that way you can get the best of both worlds, but if you find that it's too much, drop the minor. GPA matters more than what you have written on your diploma.

Honestly you're 3 semesters in and your GPA is 3.07 with a sub 3.0 science GPA. What makes you think your path has medical school in it? Unless you're studying Engineering at MIT or something equally rigorous undergraduate coursework that explains your very average GPA standing then take a long look at where things are headed. Have you calculated what scores you'll need to make up for that C had before (my assumption since the 2.9x there must have been a C in there somewhere) ?

Be smart. If med school doesn't work out you should have a major where you'll still be able to 1) feed yourself 2) be somewhat interested in the work that it takes to feed yourself 3) possibly with a spouse support the number of offspring you desire

Now if you live curled up to a shiny silver spoon nightly and making ends meet is not a problem for your as that trust fund is just about to mature in a few years then study whatever the hell you want.

Education is an investment not a lottery. Make the moves in the right direction and cover all your bases.

Dude, the major you choose is a personal decision. Like someone above said. Major in one and minor in the other one. Now, for the low GPA; the way I see it is that you have at least another 5 semester where you could get As. Now if you take summer classes to give you some more units to impact your GPA; you're looking at at least 80 units (5*15 75 + 5extra) of 4.0 GPA. This could certainly bring your GPA to above 3.5 (just guessing). Also be aware of the grade substitution for DO. :luck:

I think the better question is why medicine and what is your long term goal? Docs don't get to sit bedside and comfort patients... be thankful to the nurses who do the job most premeds think they are working towards. Shadow, volunteer, get your CNA and work at a hospital. Major in whatever you feel passionate about because you will invest yourself in your studies. Don't be afraid to take more time, or time post-undergrad working out the details. Medicine is not all about checking off the right boxes on a list, but about finding yourself, and being ready for the education to become a thinker and problem solver

Anthro clases aren't BCMP so they won't help the sGPA. If you do neuroscience and do well, then it's a win/win...a boost in cGPA and sGPA.

That said, your grades in science so far might suggest that your science foundation is weak. If so, then what are you doing to improve that before going on to more difficult classes.

Maybe someone here has some suggestions of what you can do over the summer to strengthen any science weaknesses.
