And... Browse around this forum for a while (there's a search box on the right hand side, at the top of the thread list, which can be really handy) and I think you'll find a lot of the general information that you're looking for.
I highly recommend purchasing or at least looking at the VMSAR (Veterinary Medical School Admission Requirements) book. There is a new edition every year that has the current school requirements. I found it at Barnes and Noble, I think, but there is info about where to get it here: http://www.aavmc.org/vmcas/VMSAR_publications.htm
Paid would be great, but I found it more beneficial to do volunteer, because most of the paid I found was like kennel work, and I wanted to be more involved with the vets and what they were doing. But look around, some clinics hire and pay vet assistants and stuff. Just call vet clinics in your area and see what they offer!
