Hi everyone. I just joined this network and hope to interact and learn quite a bit from other people in similar scenarios as me or students who have had success and made it to MD/DO school. I started college in fall of 2010. During this time of my life my mentality was C's get degrees. I performed poorly in school and earned many B's and some C's. After several life changing events I decided I wanted to get into medicine approximately around the spring of 2012. By this time though damage was done to my GPA. I considered attempting the MD/DO route but was told I wasn't smart enough and I "needed to find something else" by my advisor. At the time I didn't know much about how things worked and decided I wanted to earn my bachelors of science in nursing. My advisors told me this would be a very difficult feat and hard to do given my predicament. I ended up earning A's in most of my courses from Summer of 2012- Spring of 2013 with 1 B. I was accepted into the BSN program for the fall of 2013. Once I started nursing school I loved it the first semester. However in the semester after I realized the world of nursing had nothing to do with science. As I progressed through nursing school I realized it was not what I wanted to do at all and that I truley wanted to do medicine. I graduated with my BSN this past May and started a job on a cardiac progressive care unit. However, in the spring of this year I realized that there would be no better time than now to try to shoot for my goal. I enrolled in physics for the summer and took it without much difficulty. I am currently in genetics and cell biology and inorganic chemistry. Both with lab. I currently have mid A's in both courses. I plan to take Physics II, organic chemistry w/lab, and molecular genetics in the spring. I plan on taking the MCAT in the summer of 2016. My current advisor thinks this is a good route to take. I have already started studying for the current MCAT on a vigorous schedule. My current GPA is a 3.495 with these two courses and 3 more next semester to still be calculated in before I apply anywhere. My science GPA is 3.6. Sorry this was a lot of typing but I was wondering what you guys thought about my odds at any MD/DO school? I have talked to my advisor and seen the statistics but would like input from people who have been through this scenario. Thank you

Depending on your MCAT score I think you would be a strong candidate for DO schools, MD schools might be a stretch. If you score well on the MCAT, I think you might want to consider lower tier MD schools as well, but your GPA is fine for DO schools.

Work your but off to get that GPA as high as possible (aim for 3.5+ cum. And 3.7 ish Sci.) then get a 512+ on the MCAT and you would be competative for MD schools. The MCAT is really the divider like Seth Joo said. A high score means you can apply MD. Anything lower than about a 510 and DO is your best bet. Aim as high as you can and you will have options

Your GPAs are fine for any DO school and maybe a few MD ones. But come back with an MCAT score and we can better advise you.

If the OP does amazing on the MCAT, they will have a good chance at MD schools.

Thank you guys. I appreciate the feedback. I know that given my GPA I will have to make up for it quite a bit with a stellar MCAT. I currently have a couple of Kaplan books over the new MCAT material. I am not too sure on the best MCAT preparation material to obtain but figured I needed to start somewhere. I am concerned with me not having any advanced organic chemistry before taking the MCAT in the summer of 16'. I will have a semester of organic chemistry in spring but will not be able to take advanced until fall. My current advisor seems to think it will be okay if I just review what organic chemistry I need from MCAT study materials.
