I am am a sophomore in high school (i know i know, i shouldn't be so school prioritized yet) but i am interested in the bs/md program offered by NEOUCOM. does anybody have any experiance with it? What are its advantages? Should i pursue this rout if possible opposed to a traditional pre med rout?

I know they accept around a 100 applicants and i am in state, but what is the difficulty of being accepted into the program? All answers appreciated, thanks 🙂

Neoucom has actually changed its name to Neomed. I was just accepted into its bs/md program so I would be glad to tell you guys about it. You can apply your senior year either for early decision or regular. I would recommend early because most of the seats are offered then. You apply on Neomed's website. The application is a little steep but it is not that bad considering the application is for 4 schools. The application will apply you to Neomed, Kent State University, University of Akron, or Youngstown University. You then wait to see if any or all of the consortium schools offer you an interview. (if you interview at a consortium school you will automatically get an interview Neomed. I interviewed at all 4 schools the first weekend of December. Next you just wait and see if you are offered a seat at a school. I got into Akron.

Now it is competive. They offer 105 seats a year. 35 for each school. 25 seats are offered early decision. This year the average gpa and act scores of applicants went up. If I remember correctly the average gpa was 3.8 and average act 31. I would recommend taking all of the sciences your school offers. Take as many advanced, honors, and AP classes you can or some post-secondary classes ( I took 15 credit hours at Kent). Also, start volunteering ( I volunteered at my local hospital), join clubs or sports, and try to get leadership positons. Also you must have a passion for medicine and be willing to work hard.

This is not an easy program. As an undergrad you will take more classes than other college students because it is accelerated. Also you will not have summers off in you undergrad years. I will end high school May 25 and start at Akron June 4 (same day as my graduation). Then I have a week break before Fall semester starts.

I know it sounds like a lot of hard work, but it definitely has benefits.
-Accelerated you will go to school for 6-7 years instead of the regular 8.
-Reserved seat in medical school. You do not have to stress about applying later.
-The school is close to Akron and not far from Cleveland so there is lots to do.
-You get a sense of family with your fellow students since there are so few of you. ( I definitely saw this during my interviews when I got to talk to current students).
-Bs/md students recieve priority in scheduling classes.

Oh awesome! I live in a small town between Akron and Kent. I took post-secondary classes at Kent. My friend (from the same school) was accepted there and lives down the street from them. I live about 20 min from each campus
 
Actually I am pretty sure we start the same day.
 
Akron starts the 4th of June as well? Crazy. The one thing that's going to be different is definitely the lack of summer breaks, but it'll be worth it.
 
Yes we do. Funny enough, My graduation is in the evening. I will have had a full day of college before I graduate lol. Yeah not having breaks will take some getting use to. I know once Akron starts we go until August 10. Then we get a week off before we start the fall semester. I am not sure about Akron, but I know Kent gets 3 day weekends in the summer, so that's a plus. I don't think it will be too bad, I get bored having nothing to do.
 
Yeah, I heard we do at Kent. I know some people who went to Akron and they haven't complained about being bored that much. Being right next to downtown does have some benefits. Kent State is like it's own secluded campus and requires some traveling to have fun (they do have free movies and popcorn on campus, I heard) and without a car on campus, it's going to be a bit hard to get around.

Unlike you though, I won't dive right into the science classes (which could be a bad thing) I'm hoping to switch my schedule around a bit. I'm really excited for orientations.

Oh I don't mean being bored at Akron. I mean if I didn't go to school I would end up bored, unless I worked. I reall familiar with the Kent campus since I have taken classes there and live near there. There is stuff to do. I don't know about the free movies and popcorn, but they do have good restaurants at the student center. The stir-fry place is really good. Also, it not that hard to walk around campus, it isn't as big as it seems. Plus they have buses constantly going just for the campus. Everyone rides on it. Around the campus there are plenty of restaurants, I just had dinner at a good mexican restaurant last night. There are two near Kent too. There is pulp, great smoothie place from what I hear. There is a Rocknes too. In one plaza there is the movie theater, Katie's Korner (ice cream place), dairy queen, a bakery, etc. You are close to 2 Kohls, a super Walmart, Lowes, Arabica, Panera. Plus you can go downtown Kent. Also, Kent has it's own ice arena, (lol which I am swore from ice skating there last night). Oh Kent students get discount there too.

Lol I took chemistry last year, then chem 2 this year. Then I will take it this summer and all year long. Good thing it is my favorite subject. I also take cpr which sounds fun. If i had gone to Kent, I planned to switch my schedule around too. When are you orientations?
 
@lily1494: Wow, you really do know a lot about Kent haha. Coming from Columbus and going to OSU for PSEO for the past two years, Kent feels a lot smaller. Nice to know there's still a lot to do. Btw, how bad is the winter weather?

I took a lot of college classes too, so I'm hoping to get ochem in before the MCAT. A couple of science classes, humanities, and some research (hopefully!) and it won't be too bad of a course load.

Don't worry! Just keep up this year and make sure you show commitment to what you're doing. Think about how the experiences you're having now will help you later in life as a doctor. Work on test scores (like Lily1494 mentioned, the average ACT and SAT are getting more competitive), get good grades, and be confident. Apply early action, and it'll all just follow from that!
 
Plus you aren't far from Akron. Also, Cleveland is like 45 min away. I considered apply to OSU if I didn't get into this program. It is so beautiful, your lucky. Well 2011 the weather was crazy. It snowed from November to April. The bad thing about Kent, is the rec center is built to create wind. So walking around it is cold. This year I have no idea where winter is. We had a blizzard Monday (Kent closed) and today it is 50 degrees and sunny.
Normally though, we get a lot more snow and rain than Colombus because of Lake Erie. Lake effect snow causes a lot of school closings. I guess that could be a plus.
Yeah I don't think you and I will be that stressed since we do have college credit already. I wish you luck though, and I look forward to eventually meeting you. I know we will go to different schools, but kent and akron hang out a lot. Plus since I live close and my good friend will be in Kent with you. Oh and I don't know if you know but Akron and Kent are rivals so the big football game will be exciting! They compete for this thing i think it is called the witches wheel.

A blizzard? You're kidding me. We haven't even had like an inch of snow down here lol. I guess it'll take some getting used to. It's okay, I like snow as long as I don't start slipping. I look forward to meeting you too! Good luck with the rest of the year!

Ontology, if you have any questions feel free to ask me as well. I haven't seen too many NEOMED BS/MD'ers on here. Hopefully that will change so more people know about the program.

Lol yes. I guess the snow is returning Thursday. I am hoping for some school closings. I think you are going to hate snow after living up here, slipping on ice is something you have to learn how to handle. and yeah Good Luck with the rest of your year too! oh and can I ask was Kent your first choice?

I am really happy about it! I knew the competition was really stiff and I have friends who did not get in. They were interviewed, but unfortunately didn't make it.

There are a lot of posts about NEOMED on the other threads. I am lucky to find this one. Does anyone know the exact number admitted to Kent? Those of us who were admitted are so fortunate. It is nice not to have to worry as much regarding med school.

The summer will be here before we know it. I graduate a few days before we start at Kent. I live in a suburb of Cleveland ~ an hour away from Kent. I am looking forward to meeting everyone.

Regarding the weather.... this has been a wild winter season. No skiing for me.

Ohhhh boy. I've only fell twice ever. Bet that's going to change. And not to mention the driving... Ohio weather is completely crazy.

Actually, no, I had Akron first but my interview experience there didn't go well, unfortunately.

I really liked Kent's student body and teachers too. The size and layout of the campus also was a little like OSU, and I really liked that. I don't think NEOMED will publish numbers until after RD decisions are made. I know people who didn't get in either, so I consider myself lucky. I don't graduate until the weekend after I start college! It's going to be a crazy first week. Do you think you can link to the other threads (I can't seem to find them)? The journey starts in less than five months!
 
I'm really not sure how to link to the other threads, but just search NEOMED in generally and the different threads will come up.

When I was interviewing in December at Kent, I ran into a current student who attended my high school. He expressed to me that being at Kent, was like being in a family. The students formed study groups, quizzed each other, wrote study guides, etc. The work load is heavy, but doable. He also told me that the students support each other and work as a team. It's a healthy and friendly relationship amongst all the students. He was really pleased with the program🙂
 
See I was the exact opposite. I put Kent first and Akron second. My Akron interview was great. My Kent interview was just okay. the guy interviewer at kent seemed bored and pulled out his phone at one point. The lady was really nice though.
 
The interviewer pulled out his phone during the interview? hahaha thats hilarious.
 
lol yes! He was talking too while he did it. At first I thought he might be checking the time, but he was texting!

We had completely opposite interviews! The same thing (bored interviewers) happened at my Akron one. The Kent interviewers were completely friendly, loved to hear what I had to say about my experiences, and paid great attention to me. Coming from a bad interview, I felt really happy. I knew some people at Akron and liked their sciences, but I had my doubts. Did you have Akron/Kent on one day and NEOMED/YSU the other?

Yeah I did! in that order too. I told my mom the day before I got my letters that I felt like I would get into Akron, I just felt like I did so much better, which I guess I did.

I think at Kent, that all of us will be in the same dorm over the summer and the entire program. Does anyone know if there is a cafeteria opened in the summer for us to get our meals? I've heard a lot of mixed information regarding the summer. A student told me they went to Chipolte a lot over the summer for dinner. I don't want to gain the freshman 15 if you know what I mean.
 
I am not sure about the cafeteria being open in the summer, I don't see why not though. There is a grocery store right next to the campus, so if you dorm has a kitchen you can cook your food.
 
Are the people at NEOUCOM attractive? I mean the people who got in are they hot? (mainly the chicks)
 
Do you know if any body has started receiving interview letters for regular admission at NEOMED? When are they sent out?
 
Friends of mine (3 of them) are interviewing this weekend for regular admission into the BS/MD program. I wonder how many are interviewing this time around and how many openings they have?
 
I believe a little over 110 interviewed for early admission. So my guess would be something similar to that for regular admission. I do know that there are only 10 seats per school left. Maybe more depending on whether if someone declined their seat for early. So that would be 30 seats, maybe give more.
 
i was wondering if anyone can sumbit a review of NEOMED. i would like to get some opinions about its reputation (such as the students, the courses), how the medical community and other hosipitals view it ( for applying to residency). i looked around on the interweb and i couldn't find any reviews for NEOMED because of its relative newness and it is not as famous and well known (i think that's why?). i would love to apply here for the BS/MD program but i want to know if i can get into a good residency program/job if i were to graduate from here.thank you all very much!
