I am wondering what current residents, recent residency grads, or fellows takes are on the current competitiveness of nephrology.

I have read this forum for many months but this is my first post. I did search for the answer but found a similar post from 2007 and want something related to 2011 and applying for the 2013 cycle. Competitiveness I know may change on a year to year basis so I would like everyones most up to date opinions.

I am hearing many different opinions from my fellow residents. I would like to get an opinion of some people outside of my little closed world of my residency. It is nice to get the opinion of people from all over the country and not just my hospital.

I have heard anywhere from nephrology being not very competitive to being just below cardiology / GI. That is quite a difference. I just don't know what to believe anymore.

Where would you say nephrology is today 2011 applying for 2013 cycle as far as competitiveness? Has it changed in recent years?

I am interested in applying but would like to know how I should base my application. I am a US med school grad at a large University residency program, but I don't have any research. I am trying to figure how many places to apply and how competitive should the places I apply to be. I am also trying to figure out if I need to do some hard core research before I apply and if that is necessary. If I am able to match without having to bust out doing loads of research, that would be fine.

Thanks in advance for your help! Your opinions are much appreciated.

It's not competitive.

it's not easy to get a fellowship in almost anything from the IVY league or top 5 programs, but yea...what JDH said

So how important would be doing research and getting published be to getting a nephrology fellowship?

I assume that the top places and Ivy are hard to match into, but it sounds like outside the top places, it may not be too bad?

I am an American grad. I haven't done any research, so I am not looking at fancy, big name, top 20 places. I would be happy just matching somewhere.

You can still easily land a top 20 spot . . . if you want one. Put together a couple of posters in residency - nothing big - it'll be enough.

Below is what is posted on the subspecialty FAQ post. Do you think that list is actually outdated now and nephrology is no longer in the same class as pulmonary and heme/onc as far as competitiveness?
See below:

Which subspecialties are more competitive to get into then others?

Right now, most people agree with the following order of competitiveness:

Most Competitive:
Cardiology
Gastroenterology
Allergy and Immunology

Moderately Competitive:
Pulmonary
Nephrology
Hematology/Oncology

Mildly Competitive:
Infectious Diseases
Endocrinology
Rheumatology
Geriatric Medicine

You will get a fellowship!
