What are considered some of the top nephrology programs around the country? I would like to distinguish the research programs (typically 3 year track) from the primarily clinically focused programs (2 years).

I am primarily interested in applying for 2 year clinically focused programs but have not found anywhere that highlights these programs. From what i've found so far those that do a lot of research and are typically 3 year programs get a lot of prestige. That being said I'd love to hear some people chime in.

Go to the US news Best hospital listing and get a general idea of which are the top programs in nephrology. I would use the rankings as a reference to guide your application. The big name programs have 3 year research tracks but almost all of them also offer a 2 year clinical track if that is what you want to pursue.

Most research-oriented university programs have a few spots each year for 2 year clinical tracks. I finished at Penn in 2 years, and friends of mine finished at Hopkins and Vanderbilt in 2 years as well. All of us are in private practice now. So it can be done.
