So here is my situation. I am in my 3rd year of college but a little behind because of a lot of health issues I have been handed over the last 2 years such as Crohn's Disease and a rare genetic disease called Wilson's Disease plus osteoporosis (IM only 19) So my first 2 years of college were not that great. I will be in school at least 5 years altogether which is not band considering I graduated almost 2 years early. So I have 3 full years left of school. My GPA right now is a 3.0 which is not great at all but not terrible. I had to withdraw from school mid semester once due to surgery so that is also on my transcript. I am doing better illness wise and getting the hang of coping and dealing with my health. I am nervous though because my dream is to get into Medical school whether that is DO or MD school and I have NO backup plan because there is nothing else I want to do. As of now I am still continuing my studies and I need a good bit of A's to bring my GPA up but the school I am at has the hardest pre-med program in my state so its gonna be tough to get a good amount of A's to bring my GPA up to better standards. I won't take my MCAT for another year or so. Should I continue or start looking into other options? I know medical schools take into consideration the issues you have had that might make your GPA go down or having to withdraw classes which I have reasons that I could not help. Im just very stressed about all of this but I want to be a doctor no matter what. I know there is always nursing school but I do NOT want to do that. We have a DO School here and I would love to get in but need advice. Help please!

Considering you have three years of school left before graduation, if you can earn earn straight As, you'd have a cGPA of > 3.5. Depending on MCAT score, this is enough to get you into DO school, and even potentially an MD school. If things don't go as well as you'd hoped, the potential exists of completing a Special Masters program with excellent grades as another route to becoming more competitive.

If your health takes another downward detour in the future, consider a leave of absence from school so you don't have another GPA dip to explain. It's important to show that you know your limitations and have learned from past events.

Don't worry about the Ws. You have a good excuse and excellent fodder for a Secondary essay.

A steep upward grade trend is always impressive and can prove you have the academic horsepower to succeed in med school.

I foresee a low Writing Sample section for your MCAT.
