The Society of Black Academic Surgeons is holding their meeting in Cleveland on April 17-20, 2008. The guest speaker is Dr. Ian Smith, founder of the 50 Million Pound Challenge. The activity director is a very close friend Anthony Stallion, MD of Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a renowned pediatric surgeon.

Among the Guest Faculty:
  • L.D. Britt, M.D., MPH - Chairman of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Surgery
  • Eddie E. Cornwell, III M.D. - Director of Adult Trauma Services, Johns Hopkins University
  • Eddie L. Hoover, M.D. - Editor-in-Chief, Journal of national Medical Association
  • Carlos Pellegrini, M.D. - Chair of Surgery, University of Washington Medical Center
  • Jeffrey Ponsky, M.D. - Chair of GI & Laparoscopic Surgery, Case Western University
  • Marshall Strome, M.D. - Co-director of Head & Neck Transplantation at the Head and Neck Transplant Center, New York, NY
The registration fee for students/residents/fellows is only $25 and you will get to hear about the latest technical advances in general, orthopedic, cardiothoracic, vascular and trauma surgery. In addition, you will hear about every aspect of transplant surgery and minimally invasive surgery.

This organization is composed of mainly African-American surgeons in multiple fields of academic surgery and has about 200 member meaning this will be a conference where you can meet these impressive, nationally renowned leaders personally and network. There are social event planned such as a Women in Surgery Reception, a Welcome Reception, a Cleveland-experience Reception (at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) and the Presicential Reception Dinner to be held at the Cleveland Clinic.

If you are a premedical student, medical student (especially if you want to match into a great General Surgery residency) or resident (who wants to do a competitive fellowship such as Pediatric Surgery), you don't want to miss this opportunity to meet the top academic surgeons in this country for the price of a plane ticket to Cleveland (cheap to fly into from most major cities) and a hotel room (great discounts with this conference). I cannot emphasize the importance of making yourself known to people who are in a position to mentor and advise you and this conference is an excellent opportunity to do this.

This is the ultimate networking opportunity and the place to meet and speak with these folks. Go to the Society of Black Academic Surgeons website:www.sbas.net , check out the info there and register for this conference. I hope to have a meet and greet there for folks from the SDN URM Forum. I have spoken with Dr. Stallion who absolutely welcomes you. Note: Conference registration website is www.ccfcme.org/SBAS08
