So I have a very low Gpa at the moment (3.1 ogpa, 2.9 sgpa, and 2.8 bcp). However I've been taking full science course loads (4 classes a semester) of all upper level science courses and I received straight As last semester and am on track to receive straight As again this semester. I was thinking of going to school for another year and just taking all upper level bios and hopefully getting straight A's as well to bring my BCP over a 3.0.

My dream school is UOP and I really would like to get out there and network with them so they can see my face and just maybe they might give my application a little attention when they come across it. However, this has proven to be an extremely difficult task since I am from Florida. I was planning on trying to make an appointment during May (my summer begins then) and flying out to California to meet with them. The first time I talked to someone, they said they would get back with me on a good time to visit and never called back, and the second time, someone said they would just advise me over the phone because their appointments are pretty full. Both times they were extremely friendly and nice.

I did the advising on the phone and the woman answered all my questions and was so helpful and kind in answering all my questions, but it didn't help in me being able to get their attention.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what the appropriate steps to take in this situation would be?

Thanks for your help!

While networking might help in borderline cases, you're GPAs are very low. Your interest on pursuing a post bac or Masters program are the right ways to go and this is what you should focus on the most. Honestly, flying there once or twice wont do anything. If you lived in the area and can frequent the school to build true connections then things would be totally different. Just try to nail the DAT and get those GPAs to respectable levels i.e 3.4 to 3.5 in all areas. That's really gonna be the only way to gain admission. They're probably super busy and not trying to brush you off and while everyone wants a shortcut to admission the best way to go about it is simply to get the GPAs to respectable levels and then take it from there.

Networking is good but it's not as important as looking good on paper. Even if they remember you, they will not choose you over applicants who have higher DAT scores, and GPA than you.

Focus on making your application as strong as you can. Get good grades and boost your GPA. Study and do well on the DAT. Consider volunteering at a dental clinic. Write a personal statement that shows how much you want this.

Its a nice idea to keep in touch with them but that's not the most important aspect here.

Good luck

Well you like one of the most competitive schools to get into. You might be able to do some networking but in the end you'll need a way better GPA to even be considered. Plus you'll need an awesome DAT score. You need to pull your GPA up to around a 3.5 to be in the competitive pool as far as GPA's go and need to do well on the DAT (around 20). Good luck!

I understand I need to get my GPA up and I'm really working on that. I just thought this would be a good idea in addition, but seriously thanks for all your replies! 🙂
