Hey everyone. I'm having a problem remembering all of the cranial nerve nuclei in the brainstem, and I was wondering whether it's worth the time trying to cram them all into my already crowded and disorganized brain. I know neuro is pretty HY, and I'm using hY neuroanatomy, but I HATE NEURO. Has anyone who has taken the exam had any questions asking them to identify CN nuclei? Spinal tracts I have no problem with, but these nuclei are driving me to drink.
Thanks!

I had zero questions concerning nuclei, but who knows what others have had.

I agree that neuro really sucks. There is an easy to remember picture in neuroanatomy made ridiculously simple that shows the nuclei for CN 1,2,3,4 in the midbrain, CN 5,6,7,8 in the pons, and CN 9,10,11,12 in the medulla. This is not the whole story (some of the nuclei extend into other parts), but that is the extent of what I am going to learn as far as the nuclei locations.

Go from top to bottom and you can get it:

Rostral Midbrain (CN3); test via Concensual Light Reflex

Caudal Midbrain (CN4)

Midpons (CN5); test via blink reflex or Jaw Jerk

Caudal Pons (CN6, CN7); test pons midline to midbrain via Caloric Stimulus

Rostral MEDULLA (sorry) (CN8,9,10,12); test by gag reflex (you can easily sort out all the nuclei becuase they are right here...NTS, DMN(X),Ambig, etc.

Are you implying you don't like to memorize all this useless info. Didn't they tell you what med school was all about?

9,10,11,12 are in the medulla, arent they?

I would say get the drinking over with first then go back and do the memorizing 😀 . I too hated neuro - nuclei, tracks and all, luckily I only had 2-3 straight questions in my test.
