Hello there,

I am a 3rd year osteopathic student interested into pursuing neuro myself. I saw on residency explorer a lot of university programs had students with heavier research backgrounds? I was hoping if someone could maybe give me some insight on the necessity or maybe resources to get some research experience or anything that may bolster my application? My advisor did not seem to think it was necessary, but I also like to take their advice with a grain of salt. I do have some red flags including failing my first class and my board scores are not the best (a 222 step and a sub-500 comlex score). Thank you for your time!

Top-tier programs will be looking for a research background, typically multiple publications, at least some 1st author. Outside of that upper crust, research is a nice feather in your cap but not necessary to match a good quality program.

As a DO with an average step 1, you should apply broadly but be optimistic about matching somewhere that you like.

Thank you so much for input. I don’t have any volunteer experience really either, I wanted to make sure I didn’t fail anything again. I was thinking maybe hospice or some sort of elderly involved volunteering could help? Is there anything that you recommend outside of auditioning at programs I am interested in?

Almost nobody's going to ask you about a random M3 volunteering experience on your IV trail. Not even kidding, it would be a thousand times higher yield to have an interesting hobby like cooking. If you enjoy it, do it. But it's probably not going to help your app. Residency apps =/= med school apps.

The only heavy hitting things you can do now is ace step2 or get some research in. Insofar as how for research, just start cold emailing people.
