I love neurology and I think I'll apply this year; but I also have an OBSCENE outstanding loan debt (around 200K)!!! Since I don't want to be the first MD to live at the hospital's nearest trailer park, I better get my facts straight before doing anything.
There is always a lot of talk about neuro salaries being low.
According to the two online surveys I could find, the average neurology salary is around $180,000 a year. Is this accurate?
What say you, 4th year residents? Any practicing neurologist in the house? Thanks!

The amount you will make as a neurologist varies depending on several factors. Location is a major one, with a higher salary in areas having fewer docs, and also in certain parts of the U.S. Another major factor is whether you choose an academic versus private practice career. Additionally, a salary can depend on the institution, how many years you have worked, and other factors like number of procedures you do. Therefore, it is hard to say specifically how much you can expect to make. But certainly if you love the field, then it is worth it (and you will eventually pay off the debt).

Things that will make you money in neurology:

botox
emgs/ncv studies
sleep
stealing hospital supplies and selling them on the street.

Out of curiosity, how well does sleep medicine pay?

HI,

Can Neurologists do pain management? How much would that boost the salary?

Yes, neurologists can do pain management with a fellowship, but I believe that most if not all of their fellowship are for medical pain management than interventional pain. From what I've read around here, interventional spots( aka. needle work) is left mostly to anesthesiologists and physiatrists.

if you love neurology. you should do it.

it is about accurate around $18,000 based on 4 days/week work. if you have EMG, Botox and sleep income, you make around $250000 and still have reasonable time with your family. good luck.
