Yo

Can someone explain the condition and the cause of Argyll Robertson Pupil? My book just says eyes dont react to light and then they converge, so Im still confused.

Peace

Omar

If I remember correctly, it's caused by neurosyphilis (tertiary) and, like you said, the pupil accommodates but does not react to light.

Also known as "prostitute's pupil": accommodates but does not react. 🙂

Prostitute's eye..... its caused by tertiary syphillis..... it accomodates but doesnt constrict to light....caused by syphillis....

prostitutes probably have syphillis

I think that the neuro-anatomical mechanism behind this disorder is unclear. I did a quick search for it's cause on the web, but was only able to find one article which said that it may be a lesion in efferent Edinger Westphal nuclei fibers, but that's never been firmly demonstrated. It's a disorder charectorized by pupillary constriction during accomdation (when you have the patient focus both eyes on your finger and then touch his nose with your finger) and no constriction when you shine a light in the patient's eyes. I met a patient who had been previously diagnosed with this phenomena by a neurologist once, and I was able to tell that his pupil wasn't constricting to light; but I couldn't get it to constrict with accomadation too.
