Hey guys, I am taking the DAT this summer and only have one pre-req left before I go through the whole admissions process. With this said, next semester all I have to take is O Chem 2, but I want another class to possibly help me stand out from the crowd. My university is offering neurobiology (its a special topic class), and I am thinking about scheduling it. Does anyone think this will help me stand out? Also, I am thinking about taking the graduate level neuro due to the fact that all I will be taking is O Chem 2 and neuro (in addition to research). Any advice would be great!

Yes, I would recommend you taking that class. It will give you an edge when you get into dental school because that's a D1 class. Not too sure I'd take a graduate level...the importance of a "graduate level" class does not really matter. Just the fact you took the class will help...no point in getting stressed out if it's not going to be significantly beneficial. Hope this helps a little. Good luck to you!

Yea, that sounds about right. Thanks, and congrats on your acceptance! Good luck to you.

I'm actually in Neurobiology right now at my university and I would have to say it is the best class I have ever taken. I'm an undergraduate and its a graduate level class which looked really good to admissions when I was interviewing. Also, alot of the stuff you learn in that class crosses over with immunology and pathology (stuff that will be necessary to understand in dental school).

Hope that helps!

Idk Im a neurobiology major and I dont think it really helps me stand out from the crowd. But if its graduate level that might help--just make sure you do well though. OChem is a tough class.

I know its tough, but I dont think it will be near as tough as a graduate level neuro class. I called NYU because their one of my top choice school's and was told that they would rather see someone attempt a graduate level class and receive a C, as opposed to taking the undergraduate and getting a B, which doesnt make much sense to me (ha it rhymes). So I dont know, graduate or undergraduate? Also, toothbrite, what did you receive in the graduate level neuro if you dont mind me asking?

How about take the undergraduate and get a B+/A. I want to stress to you how much of a whirlwind grad neuro will be. They will prob be doing a brief overview of two thick chapters a week, leaving most of the fine details for you to learn on your own, so that there will be enough time to discuss/ present research papers. They will expect you to have had exposure before and you will need to memorize the nerve pathways and reflexes. Why risk getting a lower grade in Orgo II, the more important course?? use your time to make your Orgo grade stand out, thats what will count the most, and believe me a C will never look as good as a B+/A on your transcript, even if the C is a "graduate course". Imagine explaining it at an interview...."So I see you got a C in Neuro"..."yea well it was a grad course"..."Well it was probably a lot like what the Neuro course will be here"....😕

Well said👍. I've never thought of it that way. Thanks for the perspective.

Take the course if it interests you; I don't know if schools will really think of it as making you stand out because I think a lot of people take that class, but it will give you something to talk about if it really interests you and they ask you what your most interesting class has been.

Thats why I was thinking about taking the graduate level, but after reading what iDreamofDent said, I totally agree with him. Where have you decided to go to school Maygyver?

Ah ok. I would suggest taking the undergraduate one if it interests you; I thought it was a good class.

I really haven't decided yet. I'm still waiting to hear back from Harvard, but my current pick is probably Columbia at this moment.🙂

Do the classes that you take matter much in the admissions process outside of the prereqs? I've often thought about this.

What I mean is my friend is a communications major taking 1 maybe 2 prereqs a term for dental school - he doesnt plan to take any other science and pad his GPA with his communications degree. It seems like a smart idea to me. Though, I have gone a different route taking almost every upper div bio course offered @ my undergrad (I really enjoy my major 🙂 ) Does this course selection play a role in admission to DS?

All I know if that the schools I have interviewed at have all mentioned how many science courses I have taken. After all, the first 2 years of dental school are going to be science classes, not easy communications classes. There will always be people that "cheat" the system though.
