I’m interested in NeuroInterventional Radiology (NIR), but I know it’s highly competitive for Neurologists due to the preference for Radiologists and Neurosurgeons. There’s little data on how many Neurologists who completed the prerequisite Vascular/NCC fellowships applied and failed to secure an NIR spot.

Can anyone share anecdotal experiences about colleagues who pursued this path, tailored their Neurology residency and CV for it, and whether they ultimately succeeded or not?

Thank you!

There’s tons of non-visa offering private (not university) institutions who offer NIR fellowships now as there’s no common accreditation- yes CAST and ACGME are good but the shortage is so insane that hospitals will take anyone NIR trained. In the past 2 year all 9 of my non-visa requiring coresidents (some with good apps, some with not so good ones including only 1 NIR faculty LOR and no research) got spots in these places (or better, if they had good CV). If you don’t need a visa you’ll match.

If you need a visa though- you have to be excellent.

Thank you so much for your reply! I don't need a visa, so this helps ease my worry.
