M3, top 40 med school, recently decided that I want to apply for the neuro match. Loved the rotation. However as the decision was made recently post-rotation, no neuro research in med school-got 3 posters and 3 soon to be pubs in anesthesiology, however I now feel I like neuro more. I did do a neuro thesis in the last year of college, got honors for it, presented at a state neuro conference.
Step 1 score: 240 (neuro mean is 231)
My school recently revamped how M3 grades are done, and way less people are getting H and HP than before...not making excuses, this is a real thing that's been discussed + bought up by the masses to school admin. ...I got a mere P in Neuro.
If I have say, 2 case reports in Neuro by the time I apply, and do some early M4 rotations in Neuro (w/ good recc letters from there) and already have a great neuro rec letter from M3, do I stand a chance? I'm not necessarily looking to match into a top tier program. Totally fine w/ mid-tier.
Thanks!

LOL I'm sorry, I'm honestly really bad at jokes...what do you mean? No offense or anything I just suck at jokes
look at charting outcomes. 96.47% match rate in neurology. Family practice as a reference had a match rate of 96.32%
Our local neurology PD came to us and said, they have such difficulty attracting us MDs that they have to take FMGs so any USMD is welcome to apply and is all but guaranteed a spot. On the flip side your app looks moderately to highly competitive for almost anything.
So in essesence the only real credential you need is passing everything and a pulse. Nothing wrong with that, just its weird that you would have a moderately competitive app and are worried about matching.

Oh wow, thanks. And I was worried yes due to my relative lack of neuro research. I see people in some fields with multiple pubs in said fields. But thanks, hearing all this is reassuring.

If you go to interactive charting outcomes: Interactive Charting Outcomes in the Match - The Match, National Resident Matching Program

Plug in Neurology, US Senior, and <3 contiguous ranks (i.e. only ranked 1 or 2 programs), the match rate for a S1 >230 is basically 100%.

You'll be fine. Assuming you mean Neurology, and not Neurosurgery.
Wow. This is golden. Thanks for showing me this resource and for the help! Truly appreciate it.
Yes, Neurology, not Neurosurgery 🙂
