Neurology program list help

Applying Neurology this cycle and struggling with how many programs I should be applying to and would greatly appreciate any insights. Currently at 29 and wondering if I can cut a few that do not align with my geographic preferences.

• USMD, lower tier school on east coast
• No red flags
• Step 1 pass 1st attempt
• Step 2 27x
• Class rank: top quartile
• 7/7 honors, AOA
• 6 peer-reviewed publications, a handful more posters, all neuroscience-related
• Some volunteering in med school nothing impressive
• No leadership/advocacy
• Hoping to match east of the Mississippi, ideally midwest
• Undecided fellowship interests

Thinking about cutting out Geisinger and UPMC Erie, and maybe Alabama and Mississippi. Would that be reasonable? Thank you all in advance!

You have a strong profile and a list of programs that are spread evenly in terms of competitiveness. Cutting out these 4 programs (Geisinger, UAB, UPMC Erie, Mississippi) is very reasonable, especially given your geographic preference.

There are a select few programs on the list that would be somewhat "puzzled" by your application (as in, you are not the typical applicants they would match with). That said, it does not hurt to broaden your applications in this day and age with only virtual interviews. If you can see yourself being at the program, it makes sense to keep them on the list. You can then decide whether to accept the interview offer based on the numbers you've received.
