Neuropsych postdocs abroad?

Occasionally postings for clinical neuropsych postdocs in the UK, Australia, or elsewhere come across the various listservs, and I wonder about an American-trained student doing one. Would these be deemed "credible" in the eyes of ABPP? Are the Houston Conference Guidelines something everyone in the field aspire to or just programs/institutions in the United States? What might be the ramifications for an American student who went abroad for his/her postdoc?

To my mind, it seems like a cool chance to travel and live in a new place semi-permanently and build a larger network of professional relationships.

I think it would present a hurdle in obtaining licensure and board certification. You can contact some state boards, but I can almost guarantee that some states will not count those hours obtained as postdoctoral hours towards licensure.

You could call ABPP and ask, but my first reaction would be that they wouldn't recommend it. Training standards outside the USA are quite varied. ABPP has no way to "verify" them easily and most likely will decline the application. There are plenty of training opportunities in the USA, so I'd stick with the country where you want to practice. Fellowship is far too important to risk training that isn't in line with current standards. I'm not saying a person can't get great training abroad, but expecting it to count in the USA is probably not realistic.
