Hi,

I have several questions regarding neurosurg in Canada:
1) Given the different grading systems of different medical schools, how are applicants assessed? What sort of other criteria (in terms of research and others) are sought for?

2) Can anyone provide me with detailed information for NS in the various medical institutions? I know U of T has a detailed NS site. But I am not aware of the ones for other schools.

3) In the past, what were the odds that Mac students been successfully accepted into NS residency in different medical institutions?

Thanks in advance

I am not equipped to answer your specific questions you must be a brave soul to be considering neurosurg in Canada in this day and age. Please refer to this article if you haven't seen it already:

Keep in mind that the American Board of Neurosurgery also changed it's rules this past year and Canadian grads no longer qualify for American certification. These poor residents are essentially left with 10+ years of postgrad training, student loan debt and nowhere to go.

I also cannot answer your first questions as I am nowhere near the stage of residency assessment yet. Anyhow, the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CARMS) will have information regarding all the various places that offer neurosurgery. Last year, many neurosurgery spots (5 spots out of 15) were still unmatched after the 1st round, meaning that it may not that competitive.
