Hi,

Obviously, this is one of the most competitive fields out there, but I was wondering specifically what kind of stats. programs look for...both "top" programs and lower-tier ones. Also, can one do a general surgery residency and then do a fellowship in neurosurgery? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

As for the second question...neurosurgery has its own residency program, which is usually 5-6 years after a year of general surgery. While there are fellowships within the field, neurosurgery itself is not a fellowship.

Don't many neurosurgery residency programs follow a pyramid scheme? One year there may be 7 openings, next 3, next 1- something to that effect.

I don't know of too many programs which are still pyramidal outside of the military programs. The RRC has really cracked down on the activity.

It may appear that some are pyramidal because not all residents stay with a program, especially one as long and hard as neurosx, or residents may come and go as lab years are required (ie, here in the 3rd year there are fewer residents and we take residents in because people leave to work in the lab and then come back later).

Hope this helps.
