Anyone else out there going to be starting school at Nova?

I just moved down to Fort Lauderdale and don't know a soul, so if some one wants to hit the beach or go get some drinks let me know.

I will be starting at NOVA too =)

I am hoping to go to the BBQ thing to meet D2s and other D1s-Are you going to the BBQ thing on Aug 9?

I'll be there!!

I have not received any info on it yet, (still waiting for my mail to be forwarded to my new adress) Have you gotten any info about the laptop that we have to buy?

I am applying to NOVA for 2004 could tell me what your stats were that got you in. Also please tell me abou the school specifically the course load and the new facility.

i guess this ones for yah-e,
as a d1 trying to keep costs down , what exaclty comes in this $6000 dental kit, and do we have to buy it from the school?

Sorry about not replying to you all sooner....I just saw this as I was browsing through some old threads.

JPN: Nove dental is becoming more and more popular as we enroll our 7th incoming class, the Class of 2007. Here's a cool statistic. This past state licensure board exam (Florida state board), Nova recent graduates (Class of 2003) had a 95% passing rate while University of Florida's class only had ~75% passing rate. Not condensenting on U of F's program, but simply stating how my school is moving nowhere but up.

Due to this reason, we continue to recieve over 2000 applications year after year. According to Su-Ann, the admissions coordinator, applicants this past cycle submitted their admissions deposites quicker than in the previous years and they stick with it (meaning very little movement or dropping out to go to other dental schools). Just this past week, Su-Ann was telling me a story where an applicant is having the toughest time to decide to attend either us or Harvard. This applicant was obviously accepted to both schools, but she had decided to forgo Harvard's education and attend here at Nova.

With that said, we admissions statistics are increasing year after year. My class' numbers were ~3.4 and 18s on the DAT and the incoming class' numbers are even higher. I don't have the exact numbers yet, but I will post them as soon as I get them next week when the first day of class starts and the class is finally solidified (people can still drop out in the last minute).

Morpheus: Unfortunately the $6000 kit is a mandatory purchase. You'll see in another week, you'll receive a ton of stuff. The handpieces (drills) alone costs over $3000! You'll also receive a tackle box that includes a lot of materials, instruments, and tools. I recall this day last year, it was so exciting to see all my instruments and tools. It was just like Christmas!

I'll meet and see you in about a week during your orientation. I'll be one of many upperclassmen giving your family and you a tour of the school during your orientation weekend.

Hey Andy,

As you know I'll be going to school in NY. Should I decide to come back to FL, which is a high probability, would you happen to know what I would have to do for the FL boards??? Do I have to find my own patients? I heard so many different things and figured you might know.

Bronc:

If you're coming back to FL to practice, then you'll have to arrange to have your own patients and their accommodations. The FL state boards are usually administered at UF or at Nova. Luck for us FL students, we have our own patient pool that we use for the FL state boards.

It is truly pain in the ass for out-of-state dental graduates to recruit patients for their FL state board exam. But then again, who know what will happen in 4 years when you graduate, perhaps by then, state of FL may have a patient locator service at both FL dental schools for out-of-state testers?

Year after year, dentists from all over the world successfully pass the FL state board. Do your time in NYC and come back and tackle the FL state board. If I'm still around at Nova specializing, then maybe I'll set you up with some of my patients! 😀
