New Blog

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wow, all that assisting work without any certs?! That must be awesome (minus the pay). The place where I externed, I only got to watch...be it really good watching because the dentist would stop every few seconds to really explain what he was doing, the implications, and i'd throw in a little science fact/ basis here and there and he'd be yea very good....like the one time he was explaining how the base (implanted part) of a screw-in implant had to be placed a few months in advance in order to get anchored in properly and I blurted out...osteointegration? That impressed the heck out of him...he had me going with all the interleukins and growth factors....he said it reminded him of his dental school days (good or bad I don't know)!

I have been wanting to start a blog about my adventures through my undergraduate studies. I guess this is a good time! Here is the link to my new blog. http://predent.blogspot.com I don't have time to write my intro yet, but I will get to it soon. Right now I don't think the link will work, but keep checking!

Here's a collection of my thoughts as I started my first year of dental school at NYU. Basically having a blast overall.

Dude, that's some pretty funny stuff.

Blogs can be pretty cool, but most aren't. Most people's lives aren't interesting enough to have them documented on even a week-to-week basis. I mean what will a dental student's blog look like once things get rolling? "Well, I did a few wax-ups today, got groceries, damn dental histology sucks, went to bed." I was thinking about starting my own blog; but I realized it would be limited to angry political banter with lots of swear words and bad-mouthing of people.

that's how I feel. D school is pretty much the same ol stuff everywhere... none of which means much to those who aren't in it...

anyways, my goal is more to entertain than anything else...

Yeah, i had some good laughs reading your blog. I like your take on things; reminds me of myself.

I like your comment: " Difference between CA and NY? That flock of skimpy blondes aren't sorority girls from the valley, but are Eastern Europeans from Eastern Europe." So true!!! 😀

hey phremius, so what do you guys actually use this for at NYU? And how much does it cost? Also, do any other schools use this? I think this might actually be an interesting topic on the pre-dental forum.

While on my interview to OSU the applicants were shown a similar device. They use it to take attendance and audience participation (e.g. "How many people think ..." or "what is the answer?"). Basically it was in interactive learning tool that more or less seemed to force students to stay awake in lectures.

Take attendance? So, couldn't your friend bring your device to class and punch in that you were there? Taking attendance blows, I'd hate to go to a school that does that - this isn't high school.

we haven't used it to take attendance, just to take mini quizes interjected into our lectures. You can see the schools that use them (though it lists EVERY institute of education) at www.einstruction.com -> students

D school really felt like high school today, our dent sim lab has assigned seating...

however, as for the clique-ish thing that some people have mentioned, I haven't felt that, almost every seems open to talking to anyone, and I generally have found it to be even less cliqueish than college.

anyways, i'll keep my thoughts updated and hopefully some of ya will find it interesting. Although it's more or less originally meant for people who already know me, so I'm rather candid with my stream of consciousness.

I had this in my Biology class as a post-bac. We used it for attendance and quizzes. Most people dreaded using it because sometimes it didn't even work! I didn't like it myself...

I'm taking general chem right now, and we are using those. Or at least, we were forced to buy them. We have only used them once near the beginning of the year. 😡 Annoying to make you buy something that you aren't going to use. At this point, I wouldn't even mind using it for attendance.

We used a similar clicker in our G-Chem class for mini in-lecture quizes.
