I'm new to this forum. I have a 3.2 and no sci gpa as of yet. I'm going to do a post bacc and pre-dent seems very appealing to me, although my original intent was to shoot for med school.Eithef way I have a long path.

But I just went to predent.com and I can't make heads or tails of how people are judged for admission. It seems like any gpa has a shot, and the range is 2.4-4 for every school. My concern is the ratio of applicants to seats. Is it just that many unqualified applicants apply and that is why there ard so many applicants compared to seats? How can the gpas vary so greatly? Is everything about shadowing? I'm so confused, I feel like I'll have a decent chance but at the same time the number of seats available makes me cry!

first of all, the gpa range for every school is hardly a 2.4-4.0. MAYBE a handful of people out of the THOUSANDS that applied got in with a 2.4 & chances are they were screwin the dean of admissions.

also, the reason the # of applicants/seat are so high is because people appy EVERYWHERE. peruse the SDN board and you find clowns with 3.8's and 23 dat's applying to 15 schools...WHY?

in the end private schools hand out far more acceptances than seats because many of the qualified applicants will choose their state school if accepted b/c it is soooo much cheaper.

what i'm trying to say is don't pay attn to the range of gpa's or the # of applicants/seat b/c those stats are pretty much meaningless. i would say the average gpa is a 3.3-3.5 so if you're in this range then you're doing well. average dat score is probably 18-19.

i feel confident saying that about 50% of applicants will get accepted to at least one school. so as long as you're in the range above your chances are good. remember there is a lot that goes into a dental school app: research, shadowing, leadership, etc. some are required (shadowing) while others are icing on the cake (research).

my advice, don't stress & realize that getting into dental school is not impossible.

good luck :luck:

true that whiskey, i appreciate your optimistic attitude about the odds of getting in (50%) with those stats. i like that inspiration to go study just one more hour for the dat. more people on this site need to have some confidence in their scores, abilites, and talents. i dont have incredible stats, but i am already planning my acceptance party. you just need a little hope, and luck. if you wish hard enough, the planets always align themselves for everyone, i am hoping December 1st they align for all of us who are applying now.
