Does anyone know if you need/should get new letters of reccomendation if you are re-applying after not making it in the previous cycle?

Thanks for any info you might have.

some schools want new letters, but for the most part, you can reuse them. The one school i applied to twice that wanted new letters (they didn't even count the old ones as the two faculty ones) was Detroit-Mercy. I didn't have a problem with the other 7 schools that reapplied to though.

you do have to re-submit letters to AADSAS, they dont keep your letters from the previous cycle.

Which begs another question... I know AADSAS says the letters should be forwarded directly to them but can I get signed & sealed letters and send them in myself along with the sealed transcript? Just being paranoid here.

Right, I do know that you have to re-submit your rec letters for the new cycle. The info I am looking for is if schools look down on you sending them the same exact letters from the last cycle. Of course, I'm not looking for mind reading here, hopefully someone has some experience with this.

Thanks

yeah, i actually understood ur questions correctly. =) i was the first person to reply so you can re-read that, but most schools don't care if they're the same letters... the only school i had a problem with "repeat letters" is Detroit-Mercy. I reapplied to ASDOH, BU, Temple, Tufts, UOP, NYU, USC and none of them wanted "new" letters except UDM. Hope that helps. You should call the schools you plan to apply to and ask the admissions office though.

wait... Im confused...
the writter of the LOR sends the letters to AADSAS ???? What if the writter of my LOR wrote the letter 9 months back (like previous employer), what then? Basically they have to send it or its no good... that sucks

some schools will keep your old LORs if you ask them. it depends on the school.. jb!🙂

oooh that's a tough one. =( My undergraduate has a "reference file service" where they keep LORs in a file for a $20 and they'll send it out when you tell them to, hence why i had the same letters for two cycles. But uh, gosh, you're in a tight bind there, buddy. Good luck. i'd ask the professors just incase but i'd probably try and build a relationship with your current ones (hopefully you're taking classes) so you can get new letters. But try and see if your school has a service like mine. I know a lot of other schools do.

Are you allowed to read those letters ?

if you dont waive your right to see them then you can read them. its preferred however that you sign a waiver saying that you are not allowed to read the letters so the schools can be more assured that the opinions stated are sincere.

I'll be quitting my current job in august, and I know I'll be getting a LOR from my boss, but.... what should I ask her, to put it in an envelopse and seal it?

This letter will be about 9-10 months old when I apply for the 2009 cycle

i'm taking it you're.... not in undergrad anymore? cuz most undergrads have a reference file service through their career services center...

if you've graduated within the last 5 years i think you can try and see if your undergrad will let you make a new file..... usually they want to help out their recent alums so you can try..... but if you're past that 5 year mark then i'd have noooooo idea.....

use interfolio... i graduated almost three years ago, and I used HPO at my school, but even they are now switching to interfolio . U can reuse your letters, but it is suggested that you add at least one new one.

Im not sure what Interfolio is...

and to answer aznxhon3y's question, I am not an undergrad
I finished in '04 and now taking my pre-dental classes (post-bacc), I'll be done by may of 2008.

I'll be quitting my software development position in august so I can rush through my pre-dents classes as a fulltime student starting this Fall. I know I'll have a sweet LOR from her (my boss) but, I don't know how to get it and actually prove to them that I did not have a glance at it
