New dental school in NC announced two days ago with a first class expected in 2023 with UNC's old dean as the founding dean.

especially with 320 students a year
i can imagine the applicant pool is gonna be DEEP
I don't think that's the case. Each class is 80 students so when they have four classes enrolled (80*4 = 320) then they'll have 320 students at the school a year

ok, i get it...

Technically NC is still a very underserved state when it comes to dentistry, so on paper a new dental school would be a good idea. However the areas that are underserved will remain underserved as the NC dental graduates will still flock to the desirable areas to live (Charlotte, the triangle, etc). Not many people actually want to to work and live in rural Appalachia or eastern NC.

Exactly. It’s the same with ECU. Plenty of NC areas need GP’s and specialists. But they aren’t going there. I didn’t read the details, but I assume it will be private with a $60K plus tuition? And they will probably take at least 50% out of state students if not more? The fact they continue to open more dental schools right now just sheds more light on how much money they are all making. There isn’t a lack of dental care because of a lack of dentists, there is a lack of dental care because people either can’t afford it or because dentists are choosing to work only in certain places. And the excess of dentists and debt is just going to encourage DSO growth. Wild times man.

And government loan repayment programs could be better.

Wouldn't get your hopes up. The NC board needs to approve it first and my gut is these guys will not approve it (if they do then they will probably have some vested interests). The state dose not need another dental school. But the NC Dental Board needs to approve it. They can do a whole PR stunt and say they will do it - but if NC board says no then they can't. It will be a shame if they do. The state is already flooded with corporate and 2 great dental schools.
