I'm an MSIII trying to decide when to schedule Step 2CK. I noticed on the ERAS announcements that the new application start date has now been pushed to Sept 15th. Can someone clarify if this is the same as the Sept 1st start date from previous years.

September Application Cycle Start Date

September 15, 2012 - ACGME accredited residency programs begin receiving applications*

Would it be safe to schedule Step 2CK in mid August and still have my score in time to submit ERAS on sept 15th?

What impact can a later application start date have on the application process?

There are two date changes for next year.

Applications will now be released on Sept 15th rather than Sept 1.
MSPE's will now be released on Oct 1 rather than Nov 1.

Although no one can be certain what effect this will have on the application season, it might make interviews come earlier. If you were running a program that waited for MSPE's before deciding whom to interview, and you now get them 1 month earlier, would you move your interview dates up? We will see.

Of note, this means that your Step 2 scores, and/or your SubI grades, will need to be done 1 month earlier.

This is a great idea. I got virtually all of my interviews prior to the MSPE release date this year. It seems like an awfully important document that shows up pretty late in the game.

I got all my interviews scheduled before my Step 2 scores were in (took it in early October). Maybe this is specialty dependent, but I think as long as your Step 1 score isn't a weakness, as long as Step 2 scores are in before the rank deadline, they don't actually have to be in before interviews. Not that I would ever want to second guess aPD! 😳

All but 3 of my invites came post-MSPE. It was a long wait after submission. Never understood the long gap between ERAS submission and when the MSPE goes out.

It will be interesting to see if they do move interviews up (some programs already did this year in response to the ridiculous winter last year)

I'm curious how this date change is going to mesh with the change in the MSMP match. It seems like it's going to pile more stuff up in August/September making things tougher on IM and subspecialty PDs.

Otherwise I don't think it's going to have a major impact on applicants, other than getting interviews a little sooner. It might make it more difficult to get in that one additional away rotation letter though.

It's specialty dependent. In some specialties you just need Step 2 before you start, not before interviews or even the match.

Good to know, thanks for clearing that up!

Agreed, not sure what I was thinking.
