This has been my week/holiday to work so I've been too busy to even read threads on my forum...but I promised to let you folks know of new generics in your field...

This week I got my first bottle of generic Wellbutrin XL 300mg - haven't seen the 150mg yet, but its due to be available soon as well. I'm sure there will be a patent infringement lawsuit....but until then....I'm dispensing.

Also....generic Ambien is due out in April - we'll see.......

Sadly (& a bit out of your field) we've lost generic Plavix🙁 .

I'm told many more are due soon - I'll try to keep you posted.

Happy New Year!

Great, now we'll have 10x the sleepwalking murdering zombies claiming "the meds made me do it" 😉

How do you "lose" a generic med?

I've got a patient I'd love to put on the Wellbutrin XL. How can I find out if it's generic in my neck of the woods? Much thanks.

Remember awhile back....I talked about how generic companies would market a generic prior to the actual patent running out....well...Apothecon did just that with generic Plavix. But...Sanofi-Aventis, which is part of Bristol-Myers/Squibb sued for patent infringment & won - a rare case. This was after the market has had the generic for 6 months. Altho they won, Apothecon was not required to pull all generics which were already in distribution....which was why we've "lost" the generic until the actual patent has run out.

Well...a couple of ways...you could call your local pharmacy - perhaps the one that communicates with you the most frequently & just ask the pharmacist.

Otherwise...you can always contact Anchen Pharmaceuticals out of Irvine CA. If you google them...there is a phone & email contact.

They will tell you what wholesalers distribute their product in your area then you can go from there. Perhaps they will provide you with samples for starter pts - I think they're a small generic firm, so don't have reps.

For the most part, pharmacies purchase drugs from wholesalers. We have a very few which we purchase from directly...so your local pharmacy will be able to tell you if their wholesaler carries it.

If you work in a large clinic setting - you'll have to go talk to the director of pharmacy services to see if they're stocking it.

Much thanks, I shot an email off to Anchen and I'll chat with our hospital pharmacist manana. That's going to be a nice addition to the generic arsenal.
