Several weeks ago, someone posted that Goljan was going to make some new audio recordings during a boards review for 2nd years at his school. Anyone know what became of that? Were his lectures recorded and will they be available to the public? If so, when?

Goljan's a cool guy. A friend of mine did a Falcon USMLE review course and they had goljan as a lecturer 🙂

I'm kind of curious myself. Especially if he'll be doing something for Step 2.

i keep searching for it every few days, no luck yet. he must have some really loyal people in charge of it.

So, realize that "Goljan Audio" is actually "Falcon's Pathology Review for the USMLE."

Being a private company, "making it available to the public" means "copyright violation" and "downloaded through torrents." It fits medical school mentality that once some one has stolen something and released it to the public that other medical students EXPECT to get the newest, latest, and greatest.

Software piracy is illegal. If you want "Goljan Audio, The Update" go to Falcons website and sign up... They are "available to the public" through your generous donation of the enrollment fee.

Thank you for that "Public Service Announcement." You might have missed that the OP was asking if they'd become "available to the public" because the original thread in question had a few posts about the "possibility" of making them "commercially available" -- but we don't "know," hence the OP's question. Even one person from Goljan's school knew of the "recordings" coming up, but was unsure as to whether they'd be just a "Falcon" thing or if we might "expect" to see them available for purchase to all.

Thank you for your extremely rude and presumptive post. If you're finished lecturing me, perhaps you'd like to peruse the thread that my post referenced. Pay special attention to the post I've quoted below:

Are the current one's illegal? Yes. They were recordings made from lecture by student(s) at our school and distributed. All students are required to sign a recording contract stating that we will NOT record his lectures under penalty of law and explusion from school, but in exchange he has a secure online place for us to access them.

As to the future, he made the specific comment they are for professional publishing. Other than that, I have no clue. Professional publishing in my mind signals something like audio osmosis is for the MCAT Examkrackers but he gave no greater detail.

That's why I was asking. No one was promoting piracy. Now maybe you shouldn't make assumptions when you have no idea what you're talking about.

I think the short answer is that the first set of Goljan's are copyright violations that were never made legally available by Kaplan, and are not suitable subject for discussion on SDN because obtaining them is illegal. He now works for Falcon and unless Falcon chooses to distribute another set of recordings to the public (unlikely, given how Kaplan made nothing from the first set), the only place you can hear him is through Falcon. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for another set of tapes. And if they illegally make their way out of a Falcon lecture, they are not the proper subject of discussion on SDN. There are probably other less reputable boards where this kind of inquiry is more fruitful.

Did you even bother to follow my link? A person at the school Goljan teaches at claims that GOLJAN has said that these tapes will be for professional publishing. Your rant is nothing more than an after-school special PSA totally irrelevant to the discussion here. Please, I wasn't looking for a lecture about the dangers of illegal activity. This is a legitimate question and I'd like to know the answer without you guys coming in here and ignorantly waving your finger as if you know something you don't.

goljan is a total legend. we are still talking about his legendary tapes 10 years after the initial leak of those kaplan audio files.

👍

Some people get off on injecting themselves into conversations just so they can lecture others and come off as an authority figure. Reeks of control issues.

Goljan's lectures are more entertainment value than anything imo

Um yeah I saw the link. And no, it's not really such a "legitimate question", and here's why: If you do a search you will see that someone has floated a similar rumor on SDN about a new set of tapes being released virtually every year for many years. There is no better basis for the thread you linked than any of those that have come before it. The dude is contractually bound by Falcon and they have no intention of selling or "giving" a product away that will undermine the most profitable component of their board prep series. They saw all the dollars Kaplan lost to piracy on this and other lectures (which is why Kaplan now makes you use their lecture DVDs exclusively in their centers). You will likely be done with the Steps long before any such tape emerges, and next year the same thread will pop up.

L2D loves to monitor what others post. Just ignore.

I'm quite curious about this as well.

Unless you have inside knowledge pertaining to Goljan or Falcon Review's business operations I can't see how you are doing anything but making an educated guess. The fact that you are pretty sure they won't be made available for individual purchase and that there have been previous rumors about new tapes doesn't make his question illegitimate.

The classy thing to do would have been to admit that you didn't know the question stemmed from a post made by someone who attends Goljan's school and back off. Instead, you bash the poster because based on a rumor posted last year, her question is irrelevant and illegitimate. Come on, you're smarter than that. I can understand wanting to save face, but seriously, you look like a real ******* in this thread.

Not just "in this thread".... 😉

such as? I will gladly get my copy of the latest, baddest copy of Goljan tapes off one of those less reputable boards . Hopefully moderators on those boards don't pontificate in such a professorial fashion as some here

SDN long ago decided that this was not only not the proper forum for copyright infringement but also not the proper forum for folks to be referred to places where they could do the same.

Again, do a search and you will see that virtually the same rumors come up every year, usually from someone purporting to be in the know. It hasn't happened. From a business standpoint it likely won't happen. It would be killing the golden goose. Not sure why this merits profanity in your response.

there's nowt wrong with the old tapes anyway.
wat i dont get tho is why no one has since attempted to record him again in the lectures?
or do they have airport like security at the entrance to his classes these days preventing people bringing in phones etc

The poster's right. You're a class A ******* for your responses in this thread. No one cares that rumors have circulated in the past. If you think a question is irrelevant, get the hell out of the thread. Don't stand on your perch and try to dictate to others what they can and can't say and then act all innocent about why you're not sure you ruffled some feathers.

they sign something that says they won't replicate them and they are all online for the students that he teaches every year.

Compare post counts between the two of you. Law2Doc has been around for a long time. Law2Doc actually has a law degree as well, hence the name. While we may have been on opposite sides of arguments a few times, the only thing Law2Doc is doing is trying to protect SDN from potential risk.

The rumors of Goljan audio have been going around for a few years. Until I see an actual release, I will just consider them rumors. I'd gladly pay money for his lectures if they were released. It is simply an issue of these threads degenerate to going back to the old audio, which happens to be a copyright infringement. It doesn't mean the people that say not to discuss it don't or didn't use the files in the past. It just means they want to avoid potential dangers of discussing it.

And that means what exactly? Someone who's been around for a while can't be a jerk?

From what potential risk? The thought of piracy had never even come up in this thread. L2D just likes to play hall monitor without cause. No one's allowed to mention Goljan's name for fear that SDN could be sued? LOL, get real!

The rumors of Goljan audio have been going around for a few years.

From posters with track records here on SDN?

Until I see an actual release, I will just consider them rumors.

Good for you. It doesn't mean discussion should be forbidden here just because of what you personally choose to do.

I'd gladly pay money for his lectures if they were released. It is simply an issue of these threads degenerate to going back to the old audio, which happens to be a copyright infringement. So because in the past, these threads "degenerate to going back to the old audio," we need a hall monitor and someone like you to defend him to tell us what we may and may not post? Here's an idea -- if it violates SDN's policies, they'll close the thread and/or ban the poster. It's none of your business what people ask questions about and frankly, unless a rule has been broken (which it has not), it's none of L2D's either.

Srsly, people need to calm down and move on.

Also, that Just Joshin person pretty much argues with anything that moves, FYI. Ignore.

What dangers of discussing it? No one has posted anything infringing, so this is currently protected under free speech. Secondly, if someone did post anything it would fall under the DMCA. Law2Doc is a lawyer right? I'm sure he knows all about the safe harbor provision of the DMCA. The worst thing that could happen would be sdn gets a DMCA notice and deletes the post. Most likely the post would have already been deleted by the active moderators. They are sheltered as a provider from user generated infringement.

He's right in this case. Both L2D and OveractiveBrain swaggered into the thread, put on their cowboy hats, and took charge, even though there were no SDN rules being compromised.

I hate people who tell others what to post. It's pretentious, arrogant, annoying, and should be against SDN policy, if it isn't already. If you don't like a thread, get out of the thread and MYOB. If you feel that strongly about it, report a post so that the moderators can laugh at you for being so sensitive that you got your panties in a wad over an innocent question.

I hate people who tell others what to post.

Agreed. I didn't think L2D's comments were necessary either. There was nothing innappropriate (or illegal for that matter) being said during the first few posts.

I just take notice when someone is jumping from thread to thread in multiple forums trying to escalalate a situation (or create one). Instigators (referring to JJ not L2D) are annoyingly obvious.

Carry on.

Just a reminder: if you don't like what a poster is saying please feel free to ignore them: click on their username at the left and choose ignore from the drop down list and you don't even have to look at their posts. Personal attacks are unwarranted.

Just because a topic has been done many times before doesn't mean a user shouldn't post it. A user shouldn't post inflammatory topics such as D.O vs M.D or URM topics that have been done to death and almost always end up badly.

However this isn't one of the topics. SDN is alive because users keep on posting and donating and clicking on the ads link. 99% of all topics have been done before on this board but so what? New users post and contribute which makes those topics different.

This thread is a wealth of information.

What I can gather from it is this:

Goljan Lecturing at OSU = Review for USMLE = Falcon Review = Pirated Tapes = Illegal = Jail/Fines = Incarceration = TB = Prevention = INH = Neuropathy = Neurology = Stroke

So, Goljan has had a stroke. Why is this news just now being leaked? I hope he can recover. From what I've gathered from the old pirated tapes that every medical student (except for me) has is that he should be closing in on being a great grandfather soon...

This thread is getting ugly.

IN BEFORE IT IS LOCKED! 👍

Most sensible post in this thread haha.

L2D, do yourself a favor and stop peddling a holier than thou attitude on SDN. No one really cares about your "copied and pasted" disclaimer posts that possibly account for an additional 10k to your total. Nothing illegal has happened. Apparently you feel it's necessary to put a disclaimer on free speech. The OP was asking a simple question from an earlier thread. If that info was faulty, someone will call BS as usually happens on this forum.
