New Gre

Hey everyone I'm new here..well i've been lurking for a while but I finally decided to join bcause I really love this forum. I will be applying for doctoral programs next fall (2009) but I'm thinking about taking the GRE this fall. My question is..does anyone know when they will begin administering the new GRE. I bought a Barrons 2008 GRE prep book but it doesnt say anything about the new GRE. My other question is, what are the pros and cons of the new GRE? I heard its going to have fill in the blanks (which sucks) but what are the other changes?

I had an experimental question when I took it. Loved it--wish it had counted towards my score!

To clarify--you're not talking about the new format for things (calculator and free response for quant, fill-in-the-blank for verbal) that were piloted twoish years ago but then canceled, are you? I wasn't aware that they were planning another revamp.

Ewww... I forgot that they do an experimental section when I took mine. My experimental was a really difficult Verbal section & verbal is by far what I am strongest at so I started FREAKING OUT .... and subsequently bombed the quant section bc I was so preoccupied with the verbal, which turned out to not even count toward my score!

The moral of the story is don't spend $1,000 on a GRE course just to take the test a year later and forget the basic structure of the test.

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of reading comprehension? Those ETS people worry me...

I *think* this was shot down and they were keeping it in the current format. I remember there was a thread about it maybe 6 months ago, though it is hard to search for GRE stuff because there is a 4 letter minimum for the search.

The experimental section is EVIL. Taking the test is nerve-wracking enough without making you guess which questions are real or not! And by then, all you want to do is just see your darn score!

So there not going to be making any immediate changes to the GRE?? Thats refreshing to know..Thanks for all the responses 😀

I was reading somewhere that GRE is not going to make major changes until after June 30. They might after that.
But they promised they wouldn't do anything before that time.

I read it in a GRE study book .
