Hey everyone. I am new here, was glad to stumble across this site. I am a 21 year old student at MTSU majoring in pre-veterinary animal science. After I complete my undergraduate work I hope to get in at UGA or UT. Anyone have any experience with these schools?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I am actually considered a resident of Georgia because me stepdad is military and is stationed there.

It's a good place to be - pretty good acceptance rates for IS compared to many other schools. You no longer have to worry about taking the Biology GRE, either. Otherwise... well, look at the websites and let us know if you have any questions.

Are you referring to UT or UGA? As far as math pre reqs are concerned with these two schools, as far as I understand all that is required is College Algebra? I hope so, because I have trouble with math. I do well in science courses though(usually A's).

Hopefully I will be able to keep it about where it is now which is 3.7. One of my Animal Science professors who used to work at UTK. Said to probably even have a chance at getting in at UT you need to have a gpa of 3.5.

I meant that Georgia is a good place to be considered IS (in-state). As for the math, it's best to look at the school's websites and then email the admissions offices if something isn't clear.

UTK requires 4 credit hours of biochemistry - I remember that being strange and a bit inconvenient, since my biochem didn't have a lab.

What did you do in order to get the 4 hours for biochem? I go to MTSU and the Biochem class there is actually 4 hours. I think the prevet program there is specifically designed for transfer to UT though.

I belive UGA only accepts 1 OOS student each year.

That seems just silly. You might as well at that point accept none. If that's true, you're taking one person and putting them into a truly awkward situation of being the only person in their class not from "around there"?

Is that really true? If so, why would they do that?

on the flip side of that, unless you truly believe you are the most special person to walk the earth, don't waste your money applying!

Agreed. The more I get into this process, the more childish and arbitrary school policy seems across the board.

Why would anyone ever apply for that seat?

I'm guessing it has something to do with federal funding. If they have that one out of state student, federal money probably becomes available.

Such a load of 'good ol' boy' bullsh*t.

I agree some of the policies I have seen regarding admissions are outlandish. I mean I understand the high academic standard and the veterinary experience part. But, there is a point where stuff just becomes over kill. I really believe a lot of people who do not get accepted into veterinary school would make better vets than the ones who do(just thinking out loud here.) LOL 🙂

When I had to take my biochem, I took the MTSU semester long overview of biochem course (taught by Braden or something like that) and it was not hard at all and it was accepted by UTK, which was the biggest issue I was having.

If you're applying as OOS for UTK, you will need to have a higher GPA. All the information can be found on their website as far as math pre-reqs, too. http://www.vet.utk.edu

Good luck!:luck:

Did you graduate from MTSU? That is where I am going and have been worried about taking the Biochemistry class, but its good to hear that it was easy. I have a friend in college at UNCG and she took the Bio Chem class down there and she failed it the first time. And she is a straight A student.

No, I just took that one class at MTSU.
