I’ve been Offered a new position and am torn somewhat on what to do.

Currently with a democratic group staffing two community hospitals in a medium sized city but live about 40 minutes outside of town. I’ve been offered a job as an assistant medical director at a hospital in the smaller town I live in 5 mins from my house. All in all pay will be very similar but I’ll have less shifts + admin stuff at the new shop. I enjoy my current partners though. Would it be dumb for me to turn down the assistant medical position? Ive only been out for 2 years but think this would be a good opportunity to build resume and prepare for the day I don’t want to slave away in the pits 24/7...

Thanks for your input

New job x12 twelve hour shifts with hourly rate plus stipend. 1099

Old job mixture of 8,9s,and 12s. Need about 15-16 shifts to get comparable monthly income as new offer. W2

Can you keep the old job as prn while you start working at the smaller hospital? That way you’re not losing anything while you check out the new job. 40 minutes is a long commute but close to what I do. The ideal would be to work both places but less at the further hospital.

It’s definitely not categorically dumb to turn down the assistant medical director spot. You haven’t given us much information about your clinical hourly rate at the two spots, night load, admin duties, etc so it’s hard to really say anything more definitive.

I’ve been working 2-3 shifts per month at the smaller hospital for about one year and enjoy it. I’ve already discussed working PRN at my current job but obviously would have to fulfill the 12 shifts at the associate medical director job to remain full-time.

I intentionally left out the exact figures because like I said in my original post for the most part I will be compensated about the same regardless of which job I am choose. Maybe will make about 10-15k more at as the associate med director after converting the stipend to an hourly rate, adding savings from the mileage from the commute, savings on not having to pay my own malpractice, and a few other smaller things. New job has stated that within 1 to 2 years they would like for me to become the full medical director during which time I stipend of a double and then I’d be coming out about $40,000 a head of my current W2 spot.

The main thing I have considered is that I will be saving about 280 hours spent in a car commuting yearly which can either be converted to shifts worked or more time with the family.

Did you factor in cost of benefits for the new 1099 job? What do the admin time requirements look like in addition to the clinical shift time.

I would take the new job. More pay, less travel, potential for moving up the corporate ladder, likely better shift schedule (more day shifts, less nights, less flipping from night to day). You could always go back to the other job - just don’t burn bridges.

Sounds like you like the new job better. Don't you have partnership benefits at the SDG though?

If I were you, I'd pick the new one. Same salary, less driving, potential to go up the corporate ladder.

I'm assuming your salary math has accounted for lack of benefits on the 1099 position and you come out even afterwards. Also... You may have some greater tax benefits if you went for the 1099 assuming you've already accounted for paying your FICA taxes yourself.

Either way... Fewer work days, shorter commute, job that you like, same compensation. Sounds like a winner.

Yeah. Ive spent a lot of time trying to compare apples to apples. Thanks for the advice
