Awesome! Thanks for the post.

Looks like the importance of step II might be a little higher than most think. Perhaps this will discourage the procrastination that seemed like the right thing to do when one was trying to protect a high step I score.

What supports that? Just curious.

Let's not read too much into that comment.

The fact is that the smartest medical students go into Plastic Surgery, Dermatology, ENT, and Diagnostic Radiology.

Hence when these same students take Step 2 they STILL have the highest Step 2 scores.

Although I have to give the Med/Peds matched applicants some props. Their Step 2 score blows away the Step 2 average for Surgery, ER, and Anesthesiology residents.

I think it is page 15. The regression model predicting match success shows step II was a bigtime predictor of success, more important than step I for 3 out of the 4 applicant pools listed. I had just heard a lot of talk in the past about how step II is not much of a factor, this shows otherwise.

I don't know which personality trait that I abhor more. Pretentiousness of being called a MD as a medical student or Ignorance for not knowing the fact that applicants that score well on Step 1 take Step 2 after they turn in their rank list.

Quick question Rex, how can step 2 be considered a "factor" when applicants turn in their application before Step 2?

Nice try.

Leave the analysis to people that actually know something about the process okay.

But as mentioned if you look at the data charts, only about half of US seniors have Step II data available. How can you make such conclusions with such inconsistencies in the availability of data.

w/r/t scores, there are three outcomes:

Step I > Step II = Don't report
Step I ~ Step II = Report it or not, little effect on individual's Match outcome (includes where high scorers get consistently high scores)
Step I < Step II = Report it because it will positively affect your Match.

The only time Step II is reported is when it helps an applicant. The ability to take the exam later (procrastinating) only enhances this effect. This result is should be expected.

This information should not change your decision to report or not report your scores.

maybe someone here can help me out. i just took step 2ck, and it is not nearly what i expected, nor what the NBME predicted. i'm disappointed to say the least. i've already selected that my scores to NOT automatically update when they arrive, however, it's not september 1st just yet. will all 3 scores show up, step 1, step 2cs, step 2ck, even though i don't want the last one to show up?

is there anyway for them not to see that score? of course, eventually, they would know the score anyway, but it'd be nice to explain myself at the interview. my step 1 score was fine, i'm bewildered about step 2ck. it's like i'm looking at someone else's score report. it wasn't even close to the NBME i took 2 days before the real thing. extreme strengths becoming my worst subject in 2 days???? pretty weird. i'd rather have done worse in step 1 and better in step 2 than the other way around. i hear PDs don't like a big drop in step 2.

i'm going into IM by the way, preferencially at a university program.

also got lower in CK than Step 1. SO did 2 of my classmates. Don't beat yourself up about it...you are not alone : ) Let's just hope for the best...
