Which one would you choose? At this point, I have one acceptance at an established DO school (second DO school established in the US) and a new MD school (has not graduated any classes yet). Which one would you choose?

I'm fairly certain that I will choose MD over DO, but I've been reading some not-so-great things about new schools (just in general, not the one I was accepted to). Will I have a harder time landing a good residency if I go to a new school?

OUWB easily... Beaumont hospital is legit, the clinicals are legit. Any MD-granting school in the 50 states is going to be legit.

Unless there is some other factor (like major major cost differences), it's no comparison.

PS: they've been around for a few years now, so you won't exactly be a guinea pig.

I'd like to hear more about this too. Even though I don't have an acceptance to OUWB, I have an interview. In a couple of months, there is a possibility that I could be dealing with this decision too. I'd like to hear from someone who knows about DMU and Oakland, if possible. Thanks for posting this, Virtuoso!

Definitely ouwb

DMU (or any other solid DO program). A new MD program has 0 roots established and you're a guinea pig. Sure, in 10-15 yrs, it might be a great school (maybe even Top 20 in 20 years) BUT you're not applying in 10-20+ yrs; you're applying now and, as of now, they have no reputation. Sure, no rep is better than a bad one (so new MD program >> Ross/SGU/etc.) but still not even as good as a neutral one.

What about DO schools like WVSOM, VCOM, LECOM, PCOM vs MD schools like EVMS, Morehouse, TCMC, WVU, Quinnipiac, Cooper

Edit: New/ low-tiered/mid-tiered MD schools

My thought would be:

Top 10 MD > Top 20 MD > Top 40 MD > Mid-Tier MD (#41-80) > Established Low-Tier MD (#81-Unranked) > Established DO > New/Unestablished MD > New/Unestablished DO > SGU/Ross/etc. ~= Having Your Nose Stuck Up a Cadaver's Anus

Thanks for this. It's going to help me put things in perspective.

taking an ms1's advice over 2 residents? What do they know? They've only finished med school and already applied to residency...:meanie:

Are you serious? There was literally 4 pages of postings on this in an identical thread over the last 2 days. The question is reasonable, but this conversation JUST happened.

Id say oakland. It's legit

Did what I thought disagree with them? That said, obviously their opinions would (should) be taken over mine. My opinion comes largely from what residents at my school have said, but absolutely get it from the source when possible....

The reputation of WB hospital gives this school instant credibility unlike the usual patchwork clinical sites of most other new schools.

That's a great point. My statement was in general. If a new school has that sort of an already-established affiliate network, it's more along the lines of Mayo College of Medicine in terms of its instant credibility. (Founded in 1973, but who would think it wasn't even 40 years old yet by its reputation?)

Wait did music2doc not agree with them. I'm assuming OUWB is an established DO school (honestly don't know much about the DO schools outside the East Coast), so he's saying take OUWB over the new/unestablished MD.

I agree with his generalized ladder.

OUWB is the new MD school. DMU is the established DO school.

OUWB is the new MD school. DMU is the established DO school.

And assuming I liked ouwb amd dmu equally, I would pick ouwb. Established hospital, and presumably better rotations.

Oh haha. :smack:

My bad.

Did a google search now.

Overall I would say that the hospital affiliation of the school would be a large factor. OUWB because of William Beamont, a reputable hospital, would probably be my choice over an established DO. However, if you're talking about a school like the Commonwealth, that'd be a different story.

Don't have anything to contribute but id like to see other people reply if possible.

i don't know much about oakland, but it seems like the hospital itself isn't new. so i am guessing medical students have rotated through it and the physicians there know how to teach? if this is the case, you should definitely go MD route. the first 2 years of classroom learning is pretty even across all schools. sure newer schools will have some hiccups here or there, but if you put in the effort and do well on your boards, you will be fine.

virginia carilion was a new school couple years ago. they are associated with the carilion hospital system, which has had medical students rotating through there for years. i've spoken to their inaugural class and they had no regrets going to a new school.

the only issue you may have to worry about is financial aid. if the school hasn't graduated it's first class, you won't be getting government loans. does this new school offer private loans at competitive rates?

Wait, what? Is this actually true?

No that's not true at new MD schools. I was accepted to OUWB and from their financial aid package I know that they definitely offer government loans. I think it may be true at new DO schools but I don't have any experience with that

To the OP: I would go to OUWB. It was a very solid school with a great hospital system and I had no reservations about their accreditation status or anything like that

I've decided on going to OUWB over any DO. I was pretty much just curious about what the disadvantages of going to a new school, but it seems that OUWB has great rotations with William Beaumont, and they really seem to care about their students and want them to do well. The smaller class size compared at OUWB (~100) compared to most DO schools (~200) also is a positive for me.
