Lots of new medical schools opening, you can check out the list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_medical_schools_in_the_United_States#Developing_medical_schools

Mount Pleasant and Rochester are both nice areas, although Rochester has the advantage of being in a populated area with a lot of stuff to do, whereas Mount Pleasant is one of those Midwest college towns composed of mainly undergrads and business catering to undergrads set in the middle of cornfields as far as the eye can see.

Rochester, MI is really getting a second med school? Such a small area.

You might be thinking of Rochester, MN, where Mayo is. Rochester, MI is on the northern end of the Detroit metro area...a conurbation of about 5 million people with only one medical school (three if you count Windsor and the University of Michigan.)

Woooops. :smack: You are right. I'm from Rochester NY... TOO MANY ROCHESTERS!

Cleveland Clinic is opening one too. It may already be open? I can't remember. Either way, it's new!! 😀

California is gonna need freaking 10 more med schools to even keep up with the number of in-states.

Grr... California!! Fist of death:diebanana:

OUWBSM is gonna be the BEST!!! Especially out of the ones you mentioned.

If any of you have any questions about OUWBSM just ask me!!!

I'll tell you guys right now the faculty that OU is supplying for the school are top-notch. The facilities are amazing and the campus life is great. There's tons of great things to do around campus, literally a mall that you can walk to from campus and great restaurants and some nice bars in the area. It's metro Detroit which unlike the rest of Michigan is doing pretty well economically (Oakland county was the 2nd richest county in the U.S. not sure if it still is or not.) (26th now by personal capita). It's a great urban area. OU also has great research going on right now and adding the medical school will definitely help. They will be offering research scholarships for those who decide on a relevant capstone project. There are amazing hospitals in the area and the hospital OU is associating with is a very successful and large hospital chain that is renown for it's doctors.

The only thing that may draw people away from OUWBSM is the $40k a year it will cost, but it's definitely worth it when you come to OU and see whats brewing.

I guess I have a Q.

Is the application (AMCAS) has already passed the DEADLINE for OUWBSM?
I'm an out-of-stater (Cali).

Any insights?

It depends on what year you're talking about. If you wanted to matriculate this fall, you missed the deadline by almost half year. If you want to matriculate fall of 2012, then AMCAS starts accepting applications in June.

With an MCAT of 29, GPA of 6.63, couple of publications of medical papers in peer reviewed journals, lots of ECs and solid LORs - What do you think my chances woude have been as an OOSer?

GPA of 6.63? DAMN

Just to be clear, OUWB Med School is accepting its first class for this fall, whereas Central Michigan is slated to start with its first class in Summer 2013.

did anyone else see that Palm Beach Medical College? I had never even heard of that and can not seem to find any real information on it... did it go bust or is it actually accepting students this cycle... wtf is going on with that?😕

Do you live in Rochester, because if you do you would know that OU is NOT within walking distance of any mall, unless you consider a 1-2 mile walk walking distance. Other than that, I do agree that OU's program is one that sparks interest, especially for those in Oakland county, but it is VERY hard to get into due to the small class sizes!

There is a serious underlying problem that needs to be addressed before they keep opening up new medical schools like this. There is already a shortage of residency spots and none are really opening up, in fact, lots are being cut due to lack of funding. Medicare actually pays for the residents and with Medicare cuts, many hospitals/schools can't afford having more residents or even support the amount they had before. The AAMC needs to make sure residency slots open up in proportion to the flood of new medical schools they seem to be giving the ok to.

I hope you guys are doing your research about this because getting into medical school is more than just "I want to be a doctor, I like helping people, I have good grades and that's all I need to care about right now."

QFT

Still, would be nice to see a new medical school opening in NY. 😀

What is the evidence that there is a shortage of residency programs? A shortage according to whom? According to the applicants who wish to join a residency? A shortage according to employers? A shortage according to patients who wish to enjoy the products of a residency program?

The last time I checked there was a vast oversupply of ACGME residency programs as compared to the supply of MDs from LCME accredited programs. Thus these desperate residencies are forced to seek out other candidates from other programs just to get their own slots to fill. Creating more LCME accredited MD schools and slots will relieve some of this stress, yes?
