Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum. I just found it today and I'm sure glad I did-I've found answers to a TON of questions I had! About me, I'm going into my 4th year as an Animal Science major at The Ohio State University and am currently fully immersed in the application process. I'm completely anxiety ridden over the whole thing, so I'm really happy that I've found a place to get some advice and commiserate =) I look forward to getting to know everyone better!

Welcome, Ellie! So does that mean you are almost done with your VMCAS and are sending them this month? That is so exciting! Are you applying only to OSU or elsewhere?
Let us know if you have any questions! Browsing this forum will probably be helpful since a lot of subjects/questions are discussed here.

Thanks! Yes, I'm almost done with my VMCAS. I'm struggling a bit with my personal statement but I plan on having my first draft done by tomorrow, sending it out to family and friends to go over for me, and turning in the VMCAS by next Wednesday. Want to get it done ASAP, especially considering what I've been hearing about OSU's supplemental application this year. I have been going over and over in my mind about whether to apply to other schools than OSU and I believe I've decided against it. With my credentials (which are average to very slightly above average) I feel like I don't have too good of a chance at an OOS school (especially when I have an IS school), and when I think about it I REALLY want to go to OSU. I will give it a shot and if I don't make it this year perhaps I'll think about applying to other schools next cycle.

Welcome!!! I am also applying this cycle! We can freak out together🙂 lol

I am applying with this cycle as well, and am freaking out as well! haha But I'm freaking out more over the fact that I'm applying to 7 different schools and having to make sure that everything is complete for all of them. Good luck this cycle!

Yay! =) Are you applying to OSU?

No, unfortunately not 🙁 Illinois is the farthest north that I am applying 😉 lol

For future reference it IS possible to get in to OOS schools and not your instate.... happened to me 😀 Different aspects are weighed differently at different schools. I got in to an OOS and didn't even get an interview at my instate! 😕

Thanks for the info, sofficat! I'll remember that should I not get in this year.

I also was rejected to my IS (twice, those bastards!) and got accepted OOS, so I would advise you not to eliminate that option. On the other hand, you're young and have tons of time, can always apply again. Just don't get your heart set on one school. Even for IS, it is very long odds, and there are lots of great schools that can all make a vet out of you.

On the PS, I would also strongly advise you to have some vets read/edit it for you, if you have any good relationships with vets who you feel would support your efforts. I had lots of very literate friends read mine, and got good advice on structure, flow, etc. But probably the best feedback I got was from the vets I had read it. They had a much better perspective on how things could be expressed by me and interpreted by adcomms, they just seemed to have more of that vet insight that I think I needed. I thought it was great before, but the vet edits def made it stronger.

Maybe apply to ONE other school????

FWIW, it's come up on here before that if you are in-state for say, for example 😉, Ohio State, and have applied no where else, and are a decent, good, candidate the school would like to have, the AdComs know you're not going anywhere else. They can deny you and take other good, decent candidates they'd like to have because they KNOW you will reapply to them next year. You have no other choice, whereas if they know (and they will) that you've applied elsewhere, they know you might pass them by for another school.

Not that you're not a good candidate, it's that there are lots & lots of good, qualified candidates - not all of them are going to get in only because there isn't room. Why tell the school upfront that they can pick someone else because you'll apply next year, which is what you'd be doing?

Good point, ad coms can also take the opposite pov, however:

Oh this person applied to 10 schools? Is she/he really committed to coming to our school if we let him/her in?

They may pass you up because they think you'll get in somewhere else.

Welcome Ellie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I promise you'll love mostly everyone here!

Well, it's not really the opposite view. There's a difference between applying to only one school and applying to ten or more. I didn't say apply to ten.

And schools do over-accept, knowing that people have applied to multiple places. The point is, they over accept because people have choices to make, so if you single yourself out as NOT having choices to make.......

All that being said, there are indeed people who apply to one school only and get in the first time, and I'm sure the OP will do what they feel is best for them. I was just offering a suggestion from things I've read on here in the past.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions and I will definitely consider them all =) My only reservation, I guess, about applying to just one other school is that if I get in I HONESTLY don't think I'll go. I would be willing to sit out a year to give OSU another try. I would think it would be kind of a big faux pas to get accepted to just one school and turn them down.

Agreed. If you wouldn't go to any other school and would rather reapply to just the one, then you're right, don't apply to another school. Although I'm sure there are people on here who totally fell in love with a different school once they interviewed/visited...always something to be said for expanding one's horizons!

Good luck to you whichever way you go!

:welcome: Ellie! This is a fun place and everyone (mostly) gets along. 😛 You will really enjoy it especially around the time everyone is getting interviews/acceptance offers. Best of luck on your application and maybe we will be classmates at Ohio this time next year. 🙂

How much emphasis do the ad coms put on schools applied to anyway? That seems to me like that is really none of their concern where I applied to. I don't think it hurts the first year to try the school you really really want to go to, rather than wasting money applying to a lot of different OOS schools. I applied to my IS, and three other schools, and after getting accepted to my IS, regretted applying to the other schools which I really had no interest in other than "getting in." Additionally, it is SO expensive to go as an OOS, and if I had really thought it through, I would have done the same thing you are doing now.
Good luck!!! 😎
