Anybody know anything about this program... I'm looking at possibly doing an away here

Did you end up doing an away at NM? If so, how was it?

i rotated there as a student recently and enjoyed my experience. i was very impressed w/ the program.

dr. schenck is the chairman of the dept. and is a great guy. if i was a resident or attending there i would definitely want him representing the ortho dept. he is very down to earth, a family guy, and a great surgeon and teacher and overall human being. he had all three of us med students rotating on the service over for thanksgiving dinner at his house.

dr. quinn, the program director, is of the same caliber. as a student you spend 3 days of the rotation w/ him on his oncology service...no pimping...he just wants to get to know you as a person. i got the impression that he will go to bat for the residents and is making changes in the curriculum to move the program forward. he'll let the reins go when it comes to the residents operating if he feels comfortable with them. one example specifically was him letting the chief walk me through a retrograde femoral nail letting me get my hands dirty...best experience of med school for me.

dr. gehlart the traumatologist is a great doc and does some amazing stuff. he's even developing his own hardware. they get plenty of trauma here and he would be a good one to learn from.

residents are a great bunch and a portion live by the live hard play hard mentality. they know there stuff too. the chiefs were very impressive w/ their knowledge base, they are competent and confident, and are great teachers for the junior residents.

plus the interns didn't seem to complain too much about the general surg intern year and they also have a nightfloat system for 10 weeks during 2nd year...even though you are the sacrificial lamb during that time it does make for a better life the rest of the residency.

albuquerque has alot to offer outside the hospital w/ southwestern colorado skiing only 4 hrs away, tons of mountain biking and hiking nearby and affordable housing.

PM me w/ any questions.

I only got to see the interview day version of this program, but I really liked what I saw. The residents were among the friendliest, down-to-earth people I met on the interview trail. I was very impressed with Dr. Schenck and Dr. Quinn. They both went to the social event and made an effort to talk to everyone, and even knew some things about us from our applications. It seems that any program that takes that effort for applicants would really take care of its residents.

New Mexico is a beautiful state. There is world-class hiking and mountain biking in northern NM, southern CO, and southern UT. Great skiing too. Albuquerque is OK, there are some newer areas that are growing and are very nice.
