Does anyone have any input on Musculoskeletal Physical Examination by Malanga and Nadler. I know Malanga is a big name in MSK.

However, I already have AAOS Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care, Frontera's Essentials of PM&R, and Buschbacher's Practical Guide to Musculoskeletal Disorders. Would it be redundant to buy another book?

The Malanga book is basic material.
Master what is in the books you own and gain experience applying it and you will be fine.

I have a question. In general, which physical exam book do you guys think are the best? I know hoppenfeld is often listed, esp in the sticky pm&r books thread, but it just seems like too much text and not as many diagrams as I'd like. Has anyone invested in essentials of musculoskeletal care CD-ROM or any other diagrammatic book recs?

I disagree with Prefontaine's post. I think the Malanga book is an excellent resource including basics as well as some of the obscure tests you might occasionally encounter. Furthermore it provides a rationale for conducting a sensible physical exam instead of simply apeing someone else's.

I think that Malanga text is excellent for a few reasons:

- it is really only resource out there that describes each exam maneuver as they were originally described. It's interesting to see how they are actually described, as compared to what some people do
- it reviews the literature to help elucidate which tests are actually useful
- it has a DVD that demonstrates how to perform all the maneuvers as they were originally described

I know that in my fellowship, it is my "go to" book whenever I am teaching residents the physical examination, and the residents on our MSK rotations seem to find it helpful

It is not, however, anywhere near as comprehensive as Magee. It is great for what it does well, though, and a useful edition to a library

Agree, if for this statement alone.

If you're an MSK "specialist", you need to be able to confirm the suspected diagnosis or to identify when further diagnostic testing is indicated.

Get McGee as an atlas to show you every PE manuever under the sun, and the Malanga book to show you how to use them efficiently and effectively.
