Hey gals and guys,

This is information that was shared with my class, and I decided to post it here in case it can help someone out...

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Inova Fairfax Hospital is delighted to announce that it has received full preliminary accreditation from the ACGME for the opening of a new six person per year residency program. This program will be a single site program based at Inova Fairfax Hospital. It will enjoy the full resources of the largest teaching hospital in Northern Virginia, exposing residents to over 9500 deliveries per year, 4500 gynecologic procedures and over 25,000 outpatient ambulatory care visits. Our medical center is in the process of creating a state of the art simulation center and simulation training program. Residents will have the opportunity to participate in research at the Women's Health Integrated Research Center,a state of the art research facility established by the Department of Defense Gynecologic Cancer Center of Excellence.

The department has a core faculty of 40 generalist Ob/Gyn's, 6 gyn oncologists, 6 perinatologists, 5 reproductive endocrinologists and 5 urogynecologists. We are affiliated with both Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and George Washington University School of Medicine. We are also in the process of completing a new state-of-the-art 12 story Women and Children's Hospital which is expected to open in early 2016. The Department Faculty is looking forward to recruiting its first intern class to start training in July, 2014.
Our Program ID is 2205100301 - Inova Fairfax Hospital Program

Please encourage your students to consider this program in an extremely weIl run hospital with experienced faculty that are passionate about teaching. The program director’s email is [email protected] and he is happy to share his email with potential candidates.

Looked into it today and it's not available to apply to on ERAS yet, it's still greyed out. Wonder when it'll be available...

Rather than start another interview switch plea thread, I figured I'd stay on the Fairfax topic. I am currently scheduled to interview at Inova Fairfax on 12/13 but really need to switch to the 21st. They are currently full, but if there is anyone that is local (or not) and could possibly switch dates with me I would appreciate it so much. Please let me know if this is something you could potentially help me out with. Thanks!!

How does Inova program compare with GWU? Which one will you rank higher and why?

When do interviews for the higher levels begin?

I interviewed at both programs. I'll give you my general impressions of both off the top of my head, and if something stood out to me, good or bad.

GW: academic program, great location (Washington DC) and also situated right next to the Foggy Bottom metro station therefore very convenient, rotate at 3 hospitals (GW, Holy Cross, and new GYN rotation at the VA medical center so get to work with veterans, which I think is very unique), upper level residents have a reputation of being mean while I hear interns and PGY-2s are nicer, variety of EMR systems, strong fellowship placement. Now that incoming residents will not be rotating through INVOA, where much of their surgical experience takes place, I'm not sure how this will affect the training.

INOVA: brand new non-academic program therefore does not have any residents of its own yet, all rotations are at INOVA (no other hospitals), very large patient volume (10k deliveries per year, but also very high surgical volume), EMR is Epic, also in a great location (in suburban northern VA), hospital is constantly expanding and new buildings are going up, very large teaching faculty (e.g. 6 gyn-oncs, other subspecialties are also well represented). Gyn-onc and urogyn fellowships are only for military people. Also has a MIS fellowship (accredited?) and looking to add a MFM fellowship as the residency program gets settled. Overall, I think this program has the potential to be very strong in the coming years but it's still brand new and you have to be flexible.

Thanks for the update. Which one will you rank higher?
