new optometry school to open in 2016?

I am starting to really worry that this may be about to spiral out of control. With the new school in Virginia, and now one in Kentucky, what's to stop 10 more from opening in the next few years? In VA they specifically have said that it's main purpose is to create economic activity in VA's poorest county (by bringing in students from around the country who will spend $200,000 or so each on their optometric education in the local area). I can forsee many depressed economic areas of the country copying this idea, and unfortunately the AOA does not have the political power like the AMA does to limit the number of schools through lobbying efforts in state legislatures. I used to feel that saturation was an overblown concern, but now it may end up being worse than anyone ever imagined!

I think the AOA does have the power to do something about this. Certainly the ASCO could raise the standards that need to be met in order for new schools to be acredited, hopefully causing some schools to close, or at least prevent more from opening. Maybe an OD involved with the AOA could give some insight.
