New Osteopathic Schools?

I recently received some feedback for MDapplicants.com noting that there were two new Osteopathic schools this year. Could someone from this forum confirm this, and if they're new seperate applications rather than just different campuses available from the same application, so I may add them to MDapplicants.com?

I know one of them is PCOM-Atlanta and it is considered a seperate school by AACOMAS.

I dunno...seems silly to me to have a name like TUCOM-somthing, PCOM-somthing, LECOM-something and it considered "seperate"

but we live in a crazy wacky world.....

yes, AACOMAS had them listed separate, and you better believe they charged a fee for each.

Although TUCOM-NV is a branch campus of TUCOM-CA, it is it's own school as it will have it's own administration offices. Interviews for the Class of 2009 will be held at TUCOM-NV and not at TUCOM-CA.

Virginia had it first entering class at the Via School of Osteopathic Medicine
fall 2003. It is in Blacksburg, Virginia right near the Virginia Tech (x home of football great Michael Vick) campus. I don't know much about it yet but I would imagine it is a good school and in an incredibly scenic location. I live nearby and the Via family owns lots of land around here so they probably donated the land. My dad is a MD and around 55 (old school...ha) but actually has no real problem with MD vs. DO. He thinks there will soon be a huge shortage of doctors as many (including him) seek to retire early and the fact of the baby boomers all aging and needing more medical care. I think with time and reputation, DOs will be equally respected. Also, as you know, many people are turning to alternative types of medicine and may feel more comfortable with a doctor they see as more in tune with the "whole" person.

How could it possibly be a good school. The first class has not taken Step I exams, the professors and aministrative staff are new, and there is not one DO in the country that has graduated from that school. Hopefully it becomes a good school but lets wait and see.

of course it is a good school because the students it accepts are good students 👍 😀

The staff may be new to VCOM, but they aren't new to running schools. The dean came from KCOM which as you know is a good school. She brought together a top bunch of people to teach us. The first class is a great bunch of students and many have become leaders in National organizations. All schools had to start sometime.

Also, the fact that it got a provisional accredidation (they cannot get full accredidation until class of 2007 graduation) in its first year running says something about the quality. It's a good school.

While PCOM-Atlanta doesn't have an office open yet, they are accepting applications via AACOMAS and they do have a Dean along with staff (currently operating through PCOM). They bought a building and are working out the paperwork.

I dunno if it is so much confusion as it just sounds stupid. Bradeton & Henderson kids..you know I love ya all but man....I hope you guys in your first years petition your schools to change the names. Cause if I went to the University of Tennessee in Montata....I would have a few concerns 🙂 Extreme example but you get my drift.

What I meant was that it is well organized and has received great press and
support here in Virginia. They are using some of Virginia Tech's facilities I
believe and I doubt Virginia Tech would associate themselves with something
they saw as potentially failing. I also know that the local hospitals are
supportive of this new school. I believe it has a solid base on which to grow.

I made a visit to check out VCOM this April. My brother was getting married in Roanoke, so I took the opportunity to pay VCOM a visit. I was actually VERY 😍 impressed with the place, people, and vision. I probably wouldn't have given the school a single dime on AACOMAS before visiting the school and talking to the people there about it. Now, it is probably in my top 3 or 4 choices.

In response to the PCOM-blah, LECOM-blah, etc... at least VCOM is its own school and not just a branch campus name. Those schools would be wise to change their names soon.

However, I was also thinking that they may be using the "dual names" to lend credence/credibility to the new and not-yet fully accredited schools. Once the schools are established, they will no longer need the affiliation.
