I have been doing some searching and have found a few very profitable GP offices for sale. For a new graduate wouldn't this be the ideal situation?

If the seller were to stay on through the transition for a year or so could this take the place of an associate position? You would still be learning from an experienced dentist and be able to work on your speed at the same time. Plus, after the year is up you would have your own practice.

Is there anything I am missing?

Thanks

If you are able to finance the purchase, if the terms are agreeable, if you like what the practice is geared toward (for example if you like doing a certain kind of procedure and the practice has a lot of such cases), if you like the environment/neighborhood, absolutely.

My uncle did just that when he graduated from NYU in 1986... Purchased a practice right out of the gate and the selling dentist stayed on as an associate for 6 months to help the transition. But then again, back then his student loans weren't anywhere near as heavy as it is today ($250K+ these days for private school)...
