I'm a new pre-med student. What should I do in the following summers? I know that there's research and volunteering, but is there anything else? How would I go about finding these programs?

Thanks so much!

Depends what year you are. I'll assume a freshman. Use the search to look for getting research as an undergrad. There's a wealth of information on this site, and it is a commonly discussed topic. You will be able to find many strategies for becoming successfully employed as a research assistant. Researching and getting published IMO is hard to beat, other ideas are taking classes during the summer and volunteering in a hospital setting. Summer is also a great time to shadow a doctor.

You could sleep 👍

There is no specific formula.

You can do a combination of research programs, possible volunteering, maybe a study abroad/mission trip, work experience, etc.

But, seriously, summer is meant for you to relax a bit, too, or else you will burn out. Make sure that you set in enough time to enjoy it too. 🙂

do something fun yet productive (ie don't be a bum all summer).

do something that interests you... if it relates to medicine, that's great. if it doesn't, i'm sure thats great too so long as it is something you are passionate about (and is still productive).
