Anybody know if there are any new programs up for accreditation this year or where this information can be found? I could not seem to find it on the ACGME website.

I know SC got accredited but opted not to take a class this year. They will be starting up next year.

specifically, it is the Medical Univ. of SC (in Charleston)...not to be confused with Univ. of SC (Columbia) which already has a well established EM residency (aka palmetto health).
I wonder if the great location of the new program will take good candidtes from the columbia program? 😕

Yeah I knew about MUSC getting approved, but I was wondering about any others...as an aside Charleston is on my list of top 24 places to live from Findyourspot.com.

Really? I would not think that Corpus Christi would have the volume/pathology to support and EM residency. Both University in San Antonio and Ben Taub would be excellent locations, however both of those institutions are limited by turf battles with medicine and surgery, especially Baylor. I think the best untapped resource for a great EM residency in Texas is John Peter Smith in Fort Worth.

There's been talk on these forums of Galveston (UTMB) opening a program. Not sure if it's for 2007 or 2008.

I was actually looking at an EM job website and there was a listing for physicians to start up the corpus program.

I'm almost 100% certain about Corpus (I just worked with an attending that is headed there to be an attending for their residents). San Antonio would be great, they already have a military residency but I think there is room enough for 2 (esp. one civilian and the other mili.). Houston already has a pretty big EM residency at UTH- but there really is room for 2 in that city for sure. JPS would have to really overhaul their ED to make a residency work. Right now they are up to there eyeballs in patients and emergency medicine their is more like trying to keep your head above water. The FP program runs in house medicine, so alot of ED attendings admit without a work-up and allow the FP resident on medicine to do it, since it is good for their education and they don't have room in the ED anyway. By the way- they do have a 1 yr fellowship from their FP residency in EM. I agree with you though, the patient base is there, and there is no level I in FW, so it could easily work with some restructuring.

C'mon corpus is right at the mexican border, that's the best pathology you could ask for! TB anyone?

There is TB everywhere, since there are so many Mexicans moving to every state.

We have two "isolation rooms" in the ED, which are constantly occupied by "rule-out TB" patients. Seems like every Mexican has a chronic bloody cough and weight loss when you ask ROS.

I too have heard of the Corpus program, but not this year. The Galveston program seems more imminent than the Corpus program, if I were putting money on it.

As far as Baylor goes, its not going to happen for a long, long, looooong time. Lets just say a few old surgeons will have to die off first!

I'd be surprised. Not to rain on anybody's parade, but Galveston and UTHSC SA have been talking about it for 20 years. At least 5 academic careers have foundered on this at Galveston.

The Corpus thing is new and they are serious, but I don't know whether they have the other residencies on campus generally required nor the patient load.

In other words, don't pin hopes on any of them until the RRC speaks. 🙁

i don't think so, i think it's probably kept confidential to avoid damage to places that don't make it.
