Will any new optometry schools be opening in fall 2006 that anyone is aware of?

A new school was proposed, but it got petitioned by alot of practicing OD's so the plan got scraped. I think it was supposed to be in NC.

That's too bad. That would have been a nice location. Not too hot, but not too cold.

I really hope that if another optometry school is ever started, they seriously consider putting it in the Rocky Mountain Region. This is an entire time zone with out a single school! It's too late to be of any use to me, but I'm sure it would be extremely beneficial to many people if there were a school in this part of the US.

I heard from some people that there could be one under development in Pomona, CA.

Why did the OD's not want the school there?

I would imagine that OD's don't want any new schools. More schools means more students. More students means more optometrists to compete with them for business.

they believe that the nation is oversaturated with ODs already...and that a new school (anywhere) would do more harm than good for the profession...

Is it true that opticians are now allowed to do refractions in canada? I can't imagine that could be too good for the profession.

Effectively, a few opticians in all provinces are providing simple sight tests using auto-refractors and auto-phoropters. While they are not authorized to communicate a diagnosis (i.e. write a Rx for eyeglasses / CL's) they are getting away with it because the few that do so employ MD's to sign the prescription. The MD usually is not even physically present to oversee the test - the optician faxes the Rx to the MD, who then faxes back a signed copy.

Currently there is a proposal in the province of British Columbia to allow opticians to conduct this testing without the supersvision of either MD or OD. Opticians are also pushing for this in other provinces (Ontario for example).
