Ok. I applied for 2005, and I'm on waitlists. There were 13 schools on my list last year, and I've cut it down to 4 of 6 schools in my home state (Pa). I really don't know what schools to look at. For reference, I've got a 35 and a 3.8, with extracurriculars that are probably a B/B+. My undergrad schools isn't very powerful with adcoms, so that's a point against me. I'd like to stay (generally) in the Northeast, but I am more then open to schools in other parts of the country. Right now, the only schools I am confident about adding is Vanderbilt. Can anybody give me a little advice on what might be a good place to look?

Thanks.

You might want to take a look at MSAR. You can order it from the AAMC by clicking on the link. If you want to save the money, your premed advisor probably has a copy you can borrow. Go through it to find medical schools in the northeast that accept out-of-state students and have reasonable admissions requirements.

Your GPA and MCAT scores are competitive. Assuming everything else on your application is good, you may have gotten wait-listed because you did not apply early enough, or you did not apply to enough schools. You might want to apply again on June 1st to at least 18 schools, preferably more.

In addition to the PA schools, you might want to consider Albany Medical College, Medical College of NY, Drexel, Medical College of NJ (UMDNJ), Robert Wood Johnson (UMDNJ), George Washington, Georgetown, Howard, Eastern Virginia, Medical College of Virginia.

Best of luck.

SUNY's seem pretty receptive to PA residents. I've also heard from some friends that U of Maryland is pretty open to us too, though I never tested the theory myself.

I wouldn't add Georgetown or GW unless you really want to go there - they receive a metric f***ton of apps from all over the country.

You probably already realize that you still have a good chance for this year if you're on multiple waitlists, but you're obviously doing the right thing by looking ahead and preparing for the worst.

Good luck!

True. GW received over 10,000 applications this year. But they have no limit on the people they accept out-of-state. So they're definitely worth a shot.
