Hello,
I am a new Pharmacy student in NY and I just wanted to ask about the process of becoming a licensed pharmacist upon graduation?
I know that I have to take the NAPLEX but I've seen a few other exams (i.e.MPJE) as well and I'm a little unclear about what they are and when I'm eligible to take them...if I should etc. Any light you guys could shed on the process would be helpful. Also, I could potentially move out of the area upon graduation so what is the process for getting a license in multiple states...if that's even possible. I have tried to do some research online but nothing I find is really clear so any insight would be appreciated 🙂

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to New York State where no licensing information is clear haha. I graduated in 2011 from Albany College of Pharmacy so hopefully these will clear things up. There a couple forms to fill out and get notorized on the BOP's website but the main things are:

In NYS you have to pass:

1)NAPLEX
2) NYMPJE
3) NYS part III exam aka "Wet Lab"

After you graduate your college should inform the state board within 2 weeks that you are elligible for both NAPLEX and MPJE. You sign up for those through NABP who then give you an ATT for each exam. Part III is offered twice a year in June and January. You are elligible for part III either after graduating or after completion of your fifth year if youve completed 1000 intern hours. Def keep records of your hours because NY is very tedious with hour documentation on the application. Part 3 consists of a written part ( day 1) in which they have look a like - sound alikes, basic pharmacy math and several rx's to check. Day 2 is a compounding part where you make an IV and 2 other products. I highly advise taking part 3 early because if something goes wrong there it wont hold you back from getting licensed by six months

You can score transfer your naplex and MPJE within 90 days to different state boards, or "Electronic License Transfer" (which is essientially the same thing as score transfer but costs about 4 X as much) to different state boards through NABP. Keep in mind that most states make you fill out and pay an application fee so budget that in and complete that prior to transferring. Its a relatively easy process but costly pending on the state just plan ahead and figure out where you see yourself/ how much you want to invest.

You can't transfer your MPJE score...each state has their own MPJE or other law exam.
