Hi everybody
I'm new student I have BC in engineering and now I want to study dentistry,
I'll start in this summer semester and I have question and I wish if there is anyone can help:

I live in Michigan and I want to know which college I have to start in it? they said to me macomb community college is a good college and I saw they have biol-1000 and chem-1050 and phys-1180 and i want to know is it a good start for the summer semester or not
in case macomb is not good as the others what is your advise to me? which college i have to choose

thanks

I dont know if I would take classes at mcc. Dschools want to see your prereqs at a 4 year university and most dental schools have a certain limit of cc credits you can take. It also makes you a better applicant if you take it at a 4 year university. Bottom line, you should take classes at a 4 year. I would recommend Wayne State or UDM because it is close to MCC.

let me explain to you my case
I have bachelor degree in engineering and I have 136.5 credit and my GPA is 2.84 and I went to UDM and they gave me the requirement for admission and they want
biology 8 semester hours
physics 8 semester hours
English 6 semester hours
chemistry 8 semester hours in general chemistry
8 semester hours in organic chemistry
and there are more recommend classes like biochemistry, psychology, human anatomy,and.....
and dental schools they accept 40 credit from cc and the rest I have to take them from universities like udm or Wayne
I didn't understand what you mean (you should take classes at a 4 year)
is that mean i have to finish 4 years in any bio major to be accept in dental school

most dental schools DO NOT want any of the prereqs to be from a community college, that is what they are telling you. You should complete these courses at a UNIVERSITY.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant you should take your classes at a University like Jon said

no problem man , thank you for explain
I think I'll take them in Wayne state

where exactly do you live? (me = 18 & ryan)

your going to get different responses about this very topic. I was a software engineer before completely committing into dentistry. I had a choice between community college vs actual university.... I went with university route cause I "heard" it looks better.

I worked in I.T while doing my pre-reqs at MSU (at the time I was living in Lansing). Now that I've been back to sterling heights, I attend Oakland University. OU is a good school, and I think its a good place to start doing your pre-dental classes.

Shoot me a personal message if you have any questions.... I'd be more than happy to help you out.

wow.... I also graduated from UDM (7 years ago) with 136 credits, 3.0 GPA

I went to Oakland university today and they said to me i have to take

bio111,bio113,bio116(lab) general biol (4+4+1) credit

chm157,chm158 non-organic (5+5)credit

chm234,chm235,chm237(lab) organic (4+4+2) credit

phy101,phy102,phy158(lab) (4+4+2) credit
Do you take the same classes?
can I ask you how much you pay per credit ?
and about community college vs actual university today i called the admission office in UDM and i asked them if you have two application one of them studied in cc and the other studied in university like oc or Wayne which you would prefer she said to me of course the university cause its more strong than the cc and she said both oc and wayne is a good university to start pre dental

In your particular case, I would take it at a 4-year mainly due to the GPA issue. Just to prove to them you can do well if given another chance at another 4-year...

But with a higher GPA or as a freshman, I would recommend them to take it at a CC and save the money. The only schools that do not accept CC credits are a few expensive east state schools (Tufts and BU come to mind). Most do.

Also, do a search and find Doc Toothache's excel sheet. He has one that tells you which schools accept them and which don't.

I did most of my pre-reqs at MSU when I lived in Lansing.
I moved back to sterling heights and started attending OU in 2010... I only took 3 upper level sciences at OU (Histology, Microbiology, and medical physiology) cause, there isn't anything else left to take.... welllll I coulda taken Immunology, but it conflicted with histology

OU isn't cheap, my undergrad status was "post-bacc" and I think I was paying about $350-400 per credit (don't remember exactly)

I know alot of high school friends who went to wayne state, some of them transferred to OU cause their GPA got destroyed in Wayne (Im talking 2.5-ish), some dropped out, some finished engineering with like 2.7 GPAs.... From what I've seen, Wayne isn't GPA friendly..... I think OU is easier school and better for earning high GPA (this assumption is coming directly from my friends who attended both universities)

The only CC courses I had to take were the 100 level Biology 1 and 2.... I was working fulltime and MSU didn't offer those classes at a respectable time, so I was forced to take them at night at Lansing Community College.... But normally, I always stayed away from CC courses cause I kept hearing how the admission folks prefer university level courses.... I figured I didn't wanna take a chance and gamble, I was already at a disadvantage (having low undergrad GPA)

good luck to ya

From my understanding, most schools dont necessarily prohibit CC preqreq credits, but it does weaken your application.

I know someone who graduated from UIUC in mechanical engineering with a 3.95gpa, and I think got a 23 or 24 on this DAT. He got into UPenn and UIUC and took his prereqs at a CC, and applied late. He told me that the schools knew that he was more than academically compotent, and he proved that through his undergrad grades. Therefore, CC credits were okay for him.

To be honest, a 2.84 GPA does not show to the dental schools that you can handle a heavy courseload, even with an engineering degree. Getting A's in CC, won't prove that to them either. I think you should take your prereqs at a 4 year, and ace them all.

Btw, I live in Michigan and am currrently working as an engineer. I took my prereqs at Eastern Michigan. I was going to take them at Washtenaw but decided not to.

Hey guys I decided to take all my courses at 4 years university and I think I'll take them in Oakland or may be in Wayne because both are near to my home but now after i heard from (dental Works) about GPA in Wayne state university I think to cancel it because i tried that in my university therefore i got this GPA

and due to my GPA 2.84 I think I should take A's in all or most of the classes to get high chance to be acceptable beside high score in DAT

thanks for all and good luck

Oakland University is "relatively" easier... but by no means, is pre-dentistry curriculum easy in any school... you'll still have to work hard to achieve 4.0s.

I come from an engineering background and my experienced has shown me that engineers are lousy biology students initially lol... It takes a while for us to learn how to study for biology-type courses
