Hi guys, I am currently in undergraduate and I am in my 3rd year of college doing my bachelors in Bio, I have a 3.2 cumulative GPA, I am really interested in osteopathic medicine, I got a C+ in Orgo 1, prior to becoming an aspiring osteopathic medical student, I did not know we could retake classes, however I am in Orgo II (I might get a B), my question is should I retake classes to boost my GPA? If I retake Orgo, it will take me at least a year and half to recover (by taking it over again and getting an A), I may also become late in getting my degree and thus delaying getting done in 4 years. thank you for the advice guys! 😍

You should probably only retake C- or lower. One C+ isn't going to break any deals and can be explained easily. You would be surprised how little this will probably change your gpa, and thats assuming you do get an A. I think you should just keep chugging on and try to nail that section on the MCAT to prove you can do it. Good luck.

I agree. I got a C in Physics I and thought about retaking it but really didn't want to after getting through Physics II with an A.

Your GPA is on the lower side but a C+ isn't a reason to retake a class. Kick butt on the remaining courses you have to try to get that cummulative back up to 3.3 or so and with a 25+ MCAT and good clinical activities etc, you should be a good osteopathic applicant.

I agree with everyone else in that it seems like retaking the course is not worth it, especially since it might set you back by quite a bit. Something to think about in the future, in case it ever again becomes an issue, is that when you retake a course, AACOMAS replaces the lower grade with the higher grade. This helped me a lot when I had to retake Physics since I had a C in it the first time I took it. But I also applied with a C+ from Bio 101 and did reasonably avg on the MCAT and during the application process.

Just keep working hard and doing your best. You will do just fine! Good luck!

Hey guys, thanks for the support, I really want to get into osteopathic medical school, so with a GPA 3.3+ and 25+MCAT I should be good(with modest extracurriculars), what if I don't get in the 1st time round, is doing a postbacc or a masters a viable option?

I'd do post-bacc undergrad work. Grad work GPA is calculated separately.

Just to clarify, I'm pretty sure they take the most recent grade, not the highest one.

Actually I'm not sure on that one. I was under the impression while all grades are included in the application, only the highest is used in the GPA calculation. Can anyone else clarify?

Okay so I didn't look it up but I do believe they take your most recent grade rather than the highest. If this is the case, and someone scored lower the second time around it might be better to just have both grades calculated rather than have only the lower one count.

I got a C and C+ in Orgo I and II, respectively and I still got in. I suggest moving on, and working your butt off in the rest of the classes and in studying for the MCAT. Good luck!
