Hi SDNers!

I hope I don't get flamed for this, but for the longest time, I always thought MD was the route I wanted to go. Now, as a Junior on the brink of applying to schools this summer, I'm considering DO schools after some research. The thing is, I have a lot of lingering questions. I did a lot of past reading on SDN, and my questions still remain. I hope I don't get shut down, because really, I'm just curious and still learning. Please help if you have the time; I could really use all the input I can get!

1) Stats: I have a ~3.3-3.4 cGPA, taking the MCAT this May. What should I aim for on the MCAT? ECs and LORs are great, lots of shadowing, volunt, etc.
2) School specific: I'd love to go to UNE if possible. Any thoughts?

3) Residencies: Okay, I'm pretty lost on this. So, DO grads have DO residencies, though they can also apply to MD residencies? How hard is it for a DO to get into a "competitive" (semantics, I know...) MD residency?

Thanks!

1) Always aim for something high lol. When you aim for something higher you tend to do better. Aim for like a 34(im just putting out a number for you).

2) Apply as soon as the applications open up to maximize your chances.

3) DOs can either go to DO residencies or MD residencies. You need to take the USMLE in addition to the COMLEX if you want to apply to MD residencies. I have no clue about how hard it is to get into a competitive MD residency.

3. As far as residencies go, as a DO you can apply to both DO and MD residencies. There are also residencies with dual accreditation, which basically means the program accepts residents through both the DO match and the MD match and that the curriculum is accepted to be licensed through the AOA. You do not have to take the USMLE to get into a MD residency (although for some MD residencies it is required and for competitive specialties or programs it is advised). I went into an MD residency and only took the COMLEX exam.
