Hello everyone! I thought it would be polite to introduce myself before I bombard you all with questions in the coming days 🙂

I'm a 19 year old female who is determined to get accepted into Dental school. I will be a sophomore this year and currently have a GPA of 3.52. I discovered my skill and passion for Sculpture four years ago. Combining my talent in the arts and my interest in the human body, Dental School just seemed like the path for me. Ideally, I'd love to become a Dentist and further my education so I can create facial prosthetics in addition to tooth restoration. As for employment, I work two jobs right now and they both deal with health and fitness. Though I think these things represent me well, I know it is not enough for a school to view me as a competitive applicant.

I do intend on involving myself with community service, but what I'm most interested in is getting hands on experience in Dentistry. I'm curious, how did you all manage to work under a Dentist, particularly as a full time student? I guess I should be more curious as to how you even landed the opportunity!

I look forward to meeting you all and look forward to your responses!

Welcome aboard, and i would suggest learn everything there is to know about the DAT and take it while you are a junior. That way you will be able to start Dental School as soon as you finish college.

P.S. 19 year old girl that works in fitness😍:biglove:

lol just kidding

Klutzy - 20 year old guy who likes people in fitness- 😍😍😍

Yes. But first, please post your picture as your avatar. We will then notify you shortly of our decision on whether we, the male population at SDN, will look forward to meeting you and giving you our assistance. Thank you. 🙂

LMAO agreed

Sigh, I knew I should have said 13 year old pre-pubescent boy 🙂

I am planning on getting DAT Destroyer when school starts so I have almost 2 years to prepare before I take it in the spring of my Junior year. I'm officially done with all my gen eds, aside from an English class I have to take (THANK YOU IB!). Right now, all I have under my belt science wise are 8 credits of Anatomy and Physiology.

I'm completely intimidated by the DAT because math is NOT my strong suit and I'd hate for that one aspect to take me out of the running for a spot in Dental school :/

this thread is off to a good start. it reminds me about how some boys still think girls don't exist on the internet 😎🙄 lol

welcome to the boards! i'm a girl too, yay.

Haha, like the whole "girl" on the internet means "guy in real life."

since it seems like noone's really answering the question here 🙂, i guess i'll tell you how i got my dental assistant job

about 1 month prior to summer of 2007, I went to yellow page website and looked up all the numbers of dental offices in my area (Austin, TX). I narrowed it down to about 50 of them which would be less than 30 miles away from me, and I called each of them. When they answered the phone, I asked very politely that I am interested in learning about dentistry (after introducing myself as a junior at ___ school as pre-dent major) and if there is any opportunity i would love to come by (whether it would be a non-paid volunteer or paying assistance job). most of them asked me for my resume, so i faxed my resume to those places.
most of places were telling me that they don't need help and some offered me to come by and shadow their dentist and after trying this for about 3 days straight, i found a dentist who was willing to put me in a course and give me a ceritified dental assistant position and since then i've been getting paid 15 bux / hr plus great LOR

it takes much effort to find the right position, so take your time and try to find the best position possible

good luck!

Thank you so much! I will definitely do just that, but my issue is finding the time to work with a dentist during the day when I have school. I was contemplating taking a year off from my university and just taking night classes at a community college. I looked at my school's schedule and it seems none of the Bio classes I need are offered at night :/

A piece of advice i think isn useful, is that you should take your DAT before you take physics. Take physics your senior year and i would say take your DAT the summer before that. That way the chemistries will be fresher in your mind and you can start dental school immediately after your senior year. Get the destroyer and start with biology, using cliffs and wiki to supplement. The bio is so all-inclusive and is impossible to know completely. The earlier you start the better of a chance you will have.

Finding a paid position in a dental office isn't easy because after they train you, you'll only be able to work a short while before having to leave. Most people don't want the hassle. You can try but it's probably easier just to do some shadowing. Start with your own dentist and if he can't help, ask if he knows of someone who can. GL

I am out of state for almost the entire year because I take summer classes at my university. I make appointments with my dentist back home during the same time I'm visiting family, so asking him wouldn't do me much good 🙂

Shadowing would definitely be more beneficial to my schedule, it's just that if you're getting paid it's because you're DOING something and I think it would be amazing to have some hands on experience. I'm perfectly content with just watching and learning, so I will certainly take your advice. Thanks!

I already planned my schedule for the next 3 years and physics is in fact during my senior year, so I'm right ahead of you. For the next two years before I take my DAT I will be taking Biology classes, Gen Chem and Organic Chem. I'm having issues fitting in Microbiology and Biochemistry right now, but I assume they are important to take before the DAT, so I'll seek some advice from my academic adviser. I was advised not to take three science classes at the same time because students tend to do poorly, so I've still got some things to work out.

students do poorly when taking three science classes at once b/c they tend to slack and get lazy. but you seem on top of things and i'm pretty sure u'll be able to handle it. and as for the microbio and the biochem those can be taken senior year just as long as u take them and finish them the spring before u become enrolled into d school. 🙂

I took Western Civ this summer and only have Bio, Chem and Sculpture my fall semester. If I feel I can handle another Bio class, I'll certainly take three sciences my spring semester.

If it was just Biology, I'd register for three classes in a heartbeat. Since Chem is in the mix, I know I'll be spending A LOT of my time on formulas and I'm not sure if two Bios with labs will give me the ample time I need to do that.
